Ah, so he is worried about the sorts of crazies you might meet...

Doesn't the fact that Dr B is going to be there
And a security guard (best not mention slinkey :-) ) allay his fears at all???

I fear he hasn't much confidence in or appreciation for Dr. Bob. :) Go figure. I guess it was all those times he came across me sitting at the computer with tears rolling down my face.

It's really quite insulting. At any rate I'm insulted. I told him that the average poster here is pretty much like me. Does he think I'm a dangerous person?

Maybe he should get a PBC.

But to be kind to him, he has undiagnosed OCD, I think, as well as OCPD, and things like this really do cause him a great deal of distress.

I don't suppose he would want to come with you?

(is that allowed??)

You could tell him how much it would mean to you...

You could tell him you see it is an opportunity to get out of the house in a safe environment...

I dunno hun, I just feel sad that you feel you can't go :-(

When I started babbling neither my husband nor my T were wild about it, mainly out of a fear, I think, of the other people here. Everytime the Babble site went down, I'd get paranoid about whether my husband had figured out some way to put a block on it, and of course I was paranoid about whether he was coming here and reading things.

I've discussed the babbles with my T alot over the years, and she's ok with it now.

What happened with my H is what tends to happen with us alot. I stopped talking about it and he lost interest.

And obviously after all these years he's seen that nothing awful has come of my participation.

Sometimes I wish I could get him interested, but that's a subject for a different thread.

I live within driving distance of Chicago, so that might be a benefit. If you need another committee member, I'll give it a go.

My only question is how does the committee meet?

Brainstorming- from a semi-pro party planner ;)

OK- being pregnant gives me a small disadvantage of flight... however, it's a 14 hour drive out there.... which I have done before- to get to Ohio, on a whim... and just to see the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame... so it is possible

I do have a wedding to go to in June, so I have to check what date that is and compare it to what date this will be.

So a few things that would make a difference to those considering a plane ride or long drive....

There would have to be enough Babblers attending to make it a true get together that will be worth the trip... we all have friends here... so if we can start convincing those closer friends of ours on here, it would be a good starting point to really sealing the deal to those who are on the fence. Of course I see some of my favorites have already posted about meeting- so I'm lucky :) There are a few more I will work on....

Another thing to look into is what events could take place for the get together- fun things to do, maybe find a nice hotel that's nt too pricey that we could all stay and have a bar to schmooze in, a restaurant to eat in and somethings close by to look into (sporting events, a play, museums)... another idea is to address some good issues to talk about- maybe assign a few attendees to getting something together... like a slideshow of pictures that different babblers could send in (even ones that couldn't make it)... someone could gather good stories about how Babble ha helped them through bad times and good friends that they have met... maybe a poetry slam for those on the writing board... a book gathering- meaning babblers could bring books with thier favorite excerpts that they find meaningful, moving, helpful, specific to certain mental health issues...

And of course a party! food music maybe raffle prizes a comedian (I think we should all give stand up a try- we all have SUCH good material- it's obvious we are a funny crew :) )

I think it would be wise to keep it all on a positive note, seeing that we'll be travelling for this, we all want something positive to look forward to....

These are just ideas.. if this flies, I'd be happy to help out with getting things together

I think it mostly depends on who could feasibly make it there, the more the merrier and the more apt people will convince themselves it's worth the trip

Let me know if anything progresses further!

The Art Institute? Museum of Contemporary Art? The Field Museum? There is a river tour guided by the Architectural Society that is way cool (OK, so I'm a museum person...)

> maybe find a nice hotel that's nt too pricey that we could all stay and have a bar to schmooze in,

Maybe we can negotiate a group rate if there are enough of us coming in from out of town?

> a restaurant to eat in and somethings close by to look into (sporting events, a play, museums)...

Food, mmmm. Chicago blues music, mmm.

It sounds like a great party :)

I agree!
Who wants to come to the party?

I also live well within a day's drive (greater St Louis metro area),if that helps. Don't know what the committee might need, or what I could bring to the table, but I'm willing to help. Also I appear to be quite available on that date (no Cardinals tickets that weekend ;-) Gee, too bad they aren't up there playing the Cubs that day - what fun!!)

Guess it's hard to know if I'd be of help if I don't offer something specific....but nothing is coming to mind as I'm unsure what needs to be done..

I guess that eventually - and rather quickly - we'll be deciding where to meet and what activities to plan. I like the idea of an outdoor party but have experienced the vagaries of Chicago's summer weather before, so incorporating an indoor site into the plans is probably wise!

I don't know if this sounds too tacky, or not central enough, but what about renting out a hall like an AmVet or the Legion? Or a meeting room in a hotel so we have a base camp and a place of our own to party?

I think we'll get this organized pretty quickly with all these great ideas...

A party sounds nice and I would like to go but looking ahead in time from where I am now (in time) is not feasable. I'm geographically in the Gulf Coast area. It would be nice to have something at a hotel or within easy transportation distance of a relatively inexpensive hotel. I'm speaking as someone who's trying to avoid renting a car and trying to avoid driving in Chicago traffic! I'm not really familiar with the city and the thought of driving is, well, frightening! I think there must be wonderful stuff to see - perhaps a get-together at a hotel and that evening or the next day a visit to some interesting place together like a museum or whatever. Sort've like a mini version of a conference? People could go together by bus or taxi or if they drove into town they could drive to the museum (or whatever) and meet up with the rest of the group at a given time. For that matter, I've never seen the Univ of Chicago - that might be novel too for folks from a distance.

I want to be there! I would definitely bring my husband with, is it cool with everyone if we bring spouses? I'd probably drive as I'm in Minnesota and it's not too long of a drive.

Is the IH at the U still up for grabs? I'd be interested in finding somewhere cheap to sleep, especially considering that Chicago is going to be packed for the Blues Fest!

I think the more relaxed and casual the gathering's locale is, the easier it will be for people to make it.

I get pretty panicky when I think about trying to find stuff and follow directions, however, the web helps with printing out driving directions and so forth, and my spouse is a natural navigator, so I should good to go :-)

You can always plan more stuff to do after the fact, the point is to get people there in the first place.

Can we take a poll of who can speculatively meet?

Post the poll on every board with a link to this board?

Post the dates and maybe links for places to stay and so forth, just to help people get started....

I wanna do this thang!
