Psycho-Babble about Faith

Posted by Racquel on May 30, 2002, at 4:01:36

Hi Dr. Bob,
I've benefited tremendously from your site for several years now. Although I don't visit regularly, I read some of the posts on the new Psycho-Babble about Faith and would like to voice my opinion. I think this is absolutely the wrong place to discuss religion in such a specific, yet BROAD category because the main focus of this web site is mental health, not religious discussion. Yes, I realize faith is intertwined with every aspect of life. I am a very devout Christian, and I take my faith very seriously. However, the goal of these message boards seems to be aimed toward helping people with mental illness, not attacking/belittling/discounting their beliefs, arguing about religious dogma, discussing different philosophies and practices of faith, or discussing why one faith is better than another. Also, a lot of people unwittingly offend others regarding their faith because they don't know anything about it. I'm sure it's unintentional; nevertheless, it's EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE and only stirs up ANGER, ANXIETY, FEAR, HOSTILITY, and MORE ANGER. Is this productive mentally????
I strongly urge you to re-direct your goals regarding this web site.
Other than that, I love your site, and I'm thankful for all the help you've given so many people.
P. S. I originally posted a message on the Psycho-Babble-about-Faith board, and somehow by following various threads, it wound up posting on the Psycho-Babble-Social (?) board, in case you want to read it. Thanks. Racquel

Forgive me, but how can religious and spiritual matters NOT affect mental health? For some, as it has been strenuously argued for the past two weeks here, religion is the key to survival and coming to terms with mental illness. For others, it is a thorn in the side. But because our views differ--yes, for the very reason you state--discussions about religious and spiritual matters were given their own place.

Many people were tired of opening a post they thought would be about their problem only to find that it was really another religious parable. The things that you could find offensive would be right here among administrative posts, or on PSB among the regular chit chat (which, by the way, could be seen as less related to mental health than the faith board!).

Now that religious matters are no longer part of PSB, we know where to go for them when we want to discuss something pertaining to faith or religion. And we know where not to go when we don't or when we are offended by others' beliefs or lack of knowledge about a particular religion. We also know, however, that we can have differences of opinion as well as of experience, and a faith board is certainly the place to clear up any of the so-called mistakes made by fellow faith babblers. It may also be a place to enlighten those in their quest for comfortable spirituality.

Lou's posts, the ones to which you took offense, were the impetus for the new faith board. The reason your post wound up on PSB is that you probably just thought you were on PB about Faith! (Lou has not posted on the new board yet, as he is blocked.) It is easy to hit the link and get the wrong board; we have all done it (one of the reasons some, above, are asking for different-colored links).

I hope you will find the discussions on the faith board to be civilized.

So, people who want to post and post and post about their faith should continue ot do it on Social Babble and upset many many people who post here?? or is it only your feelings you are concerned about.

Dr Bob set up the faith board to help many ofus who were getting annoyed upset and offended by a poster who was posting huge numbers of posts regarding his miraculous recovery through faith.

I think the faith board was a great idea

I agree, as long as there is life on earth...there will be the continious debate on faith/religion. I think that it is great to have a site specifically for this. Keeping things separate, yet joined by what has brought each person here. Keep the site. If you don't want to be caught up in any kind of religious debate, then stay away from that 'room.' If you find yourself there by accident, that doesn't mean you have to linger and read the posts. JMHO. Aimee

Thanks for everyone's input. I read the replies, and I stand corrected. You are right in stating that someone who wants to talk about meds should be able to talk about meds, not discuss religious philosophy. I didn't realize that was occurring so much. Like I said, I don't visit regularly enough, so you guys know more about it than I do. I became defensive when Kat thought Lou might be a Christian, so yes, it had a great deal to do with my need to correct any misunderstanding that she may have had regarding my faith. I think discussion about religion is terrific as long as it's done in a civil way.
This is what draws me to this site so often. People speaking from their hearts to HELP other people in very real ways.
Thanks for your advice, and I will definitely stick to Psycho-Babble since that's my primary area of interest. I learned so much on that site. Anyway, hope to see some of you around the boards! Have a good one.
