Cannabidiol (CBD) can be helpful for epilepsy, pain, PTSD, anxiety and possibly depression, along with other conditions. There are a few major academic and medical institutions working with marijuana to develop a better understanding of the pharmacology of its components. It may be that CBD does not work alone, but may require an "entourage" of other substances to optimize its performance. There is quite a bit of work being done in Israel on the medicinal potential of marijuana. Especially important is the precision of administration so as to avoid the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) "high". THC does have its uses, though. It is an appetite stimulant that can be helpful, especially for people undergoing cancer chemotherapy. (CBD is an appetite suppressant). I don't know if the minimum amount of THC necessary to stimulate appetite is high enough to produce psychoactive effects.
If I'm not mistaken, CBD extract has been designated as an orphan drug by the US FDA (Epidiolex by GW Pharmaceuticals).

Kirkglen,
I don't know if you've already seen this, but one poster here (Beckett) tried CBD oil in the spring of last year and ended up being disappointed by the results.
Here's a link to the thread:

As an aside, I have not personally tried CBD oil.

Upon discontinuation, Nardil sometimes works again if one waits for more than three months before restarting it. I know one doctor whose patient had to cycle between Parnate and Nardil. Have you tried Marplan? I never received any long-term benefit from a MAOI unless I combined it with either desipramine or nortriptyline. I find that 90 mg/day of Nardil is ideal for me. With Parnate, 120 mg/day works best. Nardil + nortriptyline is probably better for treating anxiety disorders with comorbid depression.
As an aside, I just want to reiterate that CBD may not work very well without some of the other substances (an entourage) to be found in marijuana. This is still being studied.
- Good luck.

CBD is primarily for body effects. Epilepsy. Seizures. Pain. It is helpful with a wide variety of symptoms, syndromes, and diseases, improving quality of life, and sometimes even helping with healing, as in anti-cancer, but it is not usually helpful in mood except perhaps with pure uncomplicated anxiety.
The best benefits for psychiatric patients are in the whole plant. As with most things in nature, the chemical and healing components of plants are a wide mix of varying spectrums and effects.
I know two chronic major depression patients who failed about every med there is, failed ECT, yet were reborn into normalcy when they began smoking pot daily. It isn't a high. With chronic usage, the psychoactive effect develops tolerance, and the mood effects kick in, sort of in the same manner as the pattern we see with antidepressants. I'm not positive, but I believe pot greatly increase all three....serotonin, ne, and da. It can spark motivation and creativity and interest where all meds fail. Which in my opinion is pretty much the most crippling part of depression....the interest, hobbies, spiritual, motivation. Marijuana deals with those very well. Not perfect. Nothing is. Way better than meds though. Better than other herbs too.
Studies show it causes depression or psychosis. Those studies are riddled with flaws and conclusions that can be easily challenged. There are studies, more recent than those, showing evidence of the antidepressant power.
It is all in how it is used...the dosing itself...can't just smoke away...it is used like a med in a controlled fashion customized for each person.
CBD not likely to help psychiatry. The whole plant has high potential to help, especially with chronic patients who have experienced many failures.

Hi BB.

Anyone I know? :-)
Let's see if we can corroborate your two statements here.
Thanks.

Hi, Phil.
> That's an incredibly good and accurate post. Thanks.
It is good. Perhaps you can help to corroborate the accuracy of BBs statements? There is no obligation, of course.
I might be able to retrieve the sources I used for the post I submitted earlier in this thread:

I researched this stuff not too long ago. Do you find it accurate?Would you get pissed off if smoking pot were to remain illegal, but you could get cannabinoid pills at your local pharmacy that worked therapeutically in several formulations that avoided the psychoactive "high"?

I tried it. The real CBD oil stuff - not the hemp oil weaksauce stuff.
Made me very depressed for an entire day. YMMV, of course.
This is the end of the thread.
