Cannabidiol (CBD) can be helpful for epilepsy, pain, PTSD, anxiety and possibly depression, along with other conditions. There are a few major academic and medical institutions working with marijuana to develop a better understanding of the pharmacology of its components. It may be that CBD does not work alone, but may require an "entourage" of other substances to optimize its performance. There is quite a bit of work being done in Israel on the medicinal potential of marijuana. Especially important is the precision of administration so as to avoid the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) "high". THC does have its uses, though. It is an appetite stimulant that can be helpful, especially for people undergoing cancer chemotherapy. (CBD is an appetite suppressant). I don't know if the minimum amount of THC necessary to stimulate appetite is high enough to produce psychoactive effects.
If I'm not mistaken, CBD extract has been designated as an orphan drug by the US FDA (Epidiolex by GW Pharmaceuticals).
