Potential mood stabilizers Please give insight?

Posted by B2chica on March 6, 2015, at 14:50:03

This is just a one page read but if anyone can go through it and give me some insight, i couldn't tell how old it was?
http://www.ltspeed.com/bjblinder/publications/advances_in_mood_stabilizing_med.htm

what i'm interested mostly in is the second to last paragraph.

it discusses other mood stabilizers as calcium channel blockers, TRH (thyrotropin releasing hormone) plus other endogenous neuropeptides.

Has anyone heard of these and what branded/generic drug they may have turned into?
"verpamil and nimodipine (are showing special promise for rapid and hr-cycling.)"

"Dihydropyridine class of L-type calcium channel blockers, which includes nimodipine, isradipine etc., compared to phenylalkalamine verapamil may have greater MS effects."

"Highly preliminary data on TRH have raised the possibility of its possible ACUTE anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, and anti-suicide effects."

B2,

How is the zyprexa going. Sounds like you have stablized. Are you taking brand or generic?

Zyprexa is a great mood stablizer. I've also discovered that perphenazine is a good mood stabilizer also, when I tried to go off it and take more z. Didn't work out. So back up on p and now 20mg z.

i actually had to stop the zyprexa about a week and half ago... just couldnt afford anymore. however, i typically use it for only 2-5 weeks anyway. never seem to use it longer than that.

i'm still very dysthymic, and only a crying spell now and again. i finally called pdoc and requested lamictal. (she didnt seem afraid of that).
i just started that this weekend.
i am at 25mg to start. i notice nothing. but i know it needs to titrate up so we'll see. i still have no real motivation and cant concentrate to save my life. cant read for more than 5 min (and that's increased greatly from a few weeks ago) but has seemed to level off.
i am counting the days until i can go back on my adderall.

currenty
Pristiq 50mg
lamictal 25mg
gabapentin 300mg PRN up to 3x day

Calcium Channel blockers were studied awhile back and unfortunately they haven't shown to be effective as mood stabilizers.

Neither has thyroid hormone therapy.
