Med-induced Blackouts?

Posted by brynb on November 30, 2014, at 11:04:35

I've had my issues with abusing meds/dry substances in the past, usually painkillers. I currently take 8mg Ativan daily as part of my regimen. If I ever add painkillers into the mix (for legitimate reasons--like migraines) I sometimes miss the week. It seems I'm having blackouts the way alcoholics do. I don't drink. Is this the same (I haven't used pain pills because of this; my tolerance is too dangerously high, if I use them I blackout; and it throws me into addict mentality)? Anyone else able to relate?

Wow. 8 mg of ativan is really a lot. Don't mix with alcohol!

I know 8 mg is a lot, but unfortunately I have a high metabolism and that's what my body is used to. (For the record, I don't drink.) I'd like to cut it down by 1/2, get down to 4 mg within a few months. I'm not close to there yet!

Perhaps my high threshold for benzos has something to do with med-induced blackouts?

What kind of painkillers are you mixing with?

None anymore. Percs & fioricet w codeine, both legit prescribed for migraines. But I stopped bc I had to take really high doses for it to make a dent. And, combined w 8mg of Ativan, I wasn't remembering anything. I can't take ANY pain pills, any barbs, or anything that hits mu or GABA receptors. Advil will have to do for now. I've had barb and/or painkiller and/ or benzo induced blackouts for a while. I think it's akin to drinking, even tho I don't drink.

i read your post, luckily. i'm really having the desire to abuse my meds right now.
i can take about 2mg of xanax and some alcohol and forget pretty much everything of the night. its kinda scary. But usually i mix them with my gabapentin, just in case i might 'accidentally' just not wake up in the morning.
however, i know too much and i know i'm not taking enough for that.

sometimes i'll stop the xanax just so that my tolerance lowers and then i can over take again.

...i'm not doing so well right now. i didnt mean to make this about me.
yes, i have a history of abuse of meds. mostly to numb. or 'play' with meds for a roulette or reactions.

Those meds could definitely cause a problem with a high dose of Ativan. Memory loss for the time you took them together is indeed very likely.

Thanks for the responses. I'm pretty sure Ativan is the initial culprit (we're talking years of benzos), so add anything else that compromises your memory & forget it (pardon the pun!).

I'm working on getting my memory back to a better place. It's starting to scare me.

So thanks, everyone. And B2, I'm sorry--I've so been there. Chin up & hold out. I'm particularly lonely during the holidays :(.

Among the benzos, lorazepam is known for a particularly high incidence of amnesia. Have you considered a gradual cross-titration to a different benzo, possibly including some dose reduction along the way?
