Hi I'm Lynneat. My daughter is on 4mg cogentin/benztropine and doc wants to discontinue it all at once. What can happen and how can I approach her to stop it from being sudden but titrate slowly instead? You know how docs can be. You ask a question and they feel threatened many times. I really appreciate all info you can give me. Thanks.

> Thanks. LynneatIt is recommended to taper benztropine gradually to prevent cholinergic rebound withdrawal.
"Abrupt discontinuation of long-term benztropine therapy may be associated with withdrawal and cholinergic rebound symptoms, including myalgias, diaphoresis, gastrointestinal distress, lethargy, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, and relapse or exacerbation of extrapyramidal effects."

I've taken cogentin for weeks and stopped it without consequence. I don't think you have anything to worry about. The drug doesn't build up in the system, nor does any tolerance occur.
What is she taking it for?

If you only have a limited supply, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) might ease withdrawl symptoms. It too has anticholinergic properties.

I took 1mg cogentin for several years and had no problems just stoping it all of a sudden.
This is the end of the thread.
