It is recommended to taper benztropine gradually to prevent cholinergic rebound withdrawal.

"Abrupt discontinuation of long-term benztropine therapy may be associated with withdrawal and cholinergic rebound symptoms, including myalgias, diaphoresis, gastrointestinal distress, lethargy, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, and relapse or exacerbation of extrapyramidal effects."
