Posted by MJ4LIFE on August 1, 2014, at 19:57:44

I was just prescribed 20 mgs of parnate for depression and anxiety.

I don't drink alot, but if I ever do, is alcohol ok to drink while taking parnate?
I just dont want to make any mistakes!

Any info would help! Ty!

Hi, I took 100 mg of Parnate and I drank a ton. Not only did I drink about every night, but on weekends I would have 5 or 6 drinks. I would say it's totally safe, but don't drink anything that is old and work your way up to several drinks because everyone reacts differently and it might magnify your intoxication even though it didn't for me.

Hi,

I would recommend reading the following 1996 Journal of Clinical Psychiatry report titled "The making of a user friendly MAOI diet."

Abstract:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8617704

Full article pdf:
http://www.edc.gsph.pitt.edu/stard/public/docs/patienteducationmaterials/User%20Friendly%20MAOI-diet.pdf

Basically, the authors of the report recommend completely avoiding tap beers and limiting alcohol consumption to two servings of either wine (red or white) or bottled or canned beer from domestic breweries. A serving of wine is a four-ounce glass, and a serving of beer is a 12-ounce can or bottle.

I don't recall drinking alcoholic beverages when I took Parnate, but I do remember alcohol having a more intoxicating effect on me than usual when I drank beer in combination with Nardil, another MAOI. The likelihood that Parnate may intensify the effects of alcohol may not be as great as it is for Nardil, but I would be mindful of the possibility that such an effect might occur from drinking alcoholic beverages while taking Parnate.

he's a 'social drinker' i don't think your method of increasing alcohol is productive.
you sound like every alcoholic i know. not saying you are indeed an alcoholic but go to an aa meeting and say what you just said.
i do know one thing..you passed social drinking somewhere in the past. if you still drink like a fish you now have another monkey on your back.
mixing meds with booze is very common then people say the meds don't work so now they just drink. but they forget to tell their doctor how much drinking they are doing. it's a slippery slope. when talking meds and alcohol is totally safe you have to know that nothing is totally safe. you take powerful meds to beat depression and anxiety when alcohol increases both.
here's the catch. some people can drink 4 beers a day and not be an alcoholic. another person has two glasses of wine every sunday night with dinner but everyday they can't wait for sunday. they are alcoholics. i don't claim to be an expert so consult an addiction expert. preferably a recovering alcoholic. the last thing you want to do is cross the line.

Hi, I also wanted to add that I never drank tap beer, since it's contraindicated. I drank tons of regular beer rhough.

As Phil wrote for some 1 or 2 is too much. And some also say that alcohol can keep a med from working. Talk with your doctor. Phillipa

I don't understand what is wrong with having a drink 5 to 6 days a week. If you network, date, have friends, and live in the south, you will drink every night of the week and heavily on at least two days of the week.

no....it won't cause interaction, parnate to avoid is cheeze and ... ill have to get the MAOI diet from google, you can't certain stuff on parnate, hypertensive reaction.....but alcohol does increase heart rate with some people, and parnate is antidepressant stimulant, so....that maybe the only thing that interaction would happen one more...it's antidepressant effects, alcohol alters the nueros in the brain, and can act as a sedative, it would decrease the dopamine effect of parnate....alcohol works on GABA and decreases certain nuerotransmitters.....
