In reply to CAN I SOCIALLY DRINK ALCOHOL ON PARNATE?, posted by MJ4LIFE on August 1, 2014, at 19:57:44
Hi,
I would recommend reading the following 1996 Journal of Clinical Psychiatry report titled "The making of a user friendly MAOI diet."
Abstract:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8617704Full article pdf:
http://www.edc.gsph.pitt.edu/stard/public/docs/patienteducationmaterials/User%20Friendly%20MAOI-diet.pdfBasically, the authors of the report recommend completely avoiding tap beers and limiting alcohol consumption to two servings of either wine (red or white) or bottled or canned beer from domestic breweries. A serving of wine is a four-ounce glass, and a serving of beer is a 12-ounce can or bottle.
I don't recall drinking alcoholic beverages when I took Parnate, but I do remember alcohol having a more intoxicating effect on me than usual when I drank beer in combination with Nardil, another MAOI. The likelihood that Parnate may intensify the effects of alcohol may not be as great as it is for Nardil, but I would be mindful of the possibility that such an effect might occur from drinking alcoholic beverages while taking Parnate.
