Differences Between Wellbutrin SR and XL?

Posted by MRM1666 on January 2, 2013, at 20:26:32

Hello.

I've suffered from major depression for almost my entire adult life (I'm 51 now) and I've been on just about every prescription anti-depressant, except for Wellbutrin.

My primary symptom is a kind of tiredness.

Can anyone say if one formulation of Wellbutrin is any more "activating" than the other formulation?

Thank you.

Xl is released in 3 doses...300mg xl would release 100mg in morning, afternoon, and then late afternoon...5pm. I was on both SR and XL...SR is only released twice...you have to redose on SR forms.

But, maybe SR....because xl will last litterly 12 hours....SR is shorter in duration, and you can take the SR form again....wellbutrin can cause insomnia...watch out...but seroquel is good for this.

The only difference is the potency and timing - Welbutrin SR is taken twice a day, but contains a lower dose than Welbutrin XL which is taken once a day

The effect of either preperation should be the same provided they are administered at the same dose.

If you try Welbitrin and find that it helps, but needs a nit more "kick", it can safely be combined with Zoloft

Thank you both for your responses.

Right now, I'm on;

1. 60 mg of Parnate,
2. 250 mg of Nuvigil, and
3. 300 mg of Seroquel at night (primarily for sleep)

I've just started with a new psychopharmacologist and he hasn't made any changes yet. But even with the above combination I experience a great loss of energy compared to when I didn't experience major depression (in my early 20s); I continue to experience fatigue--even though I can sleep fine (and I know that this is a cardinal symptom of depression in some).

My prior psychopharmacologist refused to add a TCA or stimulant because I'm on Parnate. The current MD I'm seeing said he might consider it but for now he's only spoken to me of starting to take Omega 3 Fatty Acids with DHA and EPA. He has also spoken to me of Deplin (15mg), and has further spoken to me of Deprenyl, or Emsam, the transdermal patch and, finally, of D- and DL-phenylalanine.

He has not spoken to me, yet, of adding any other psychiatric medications for now (but he will the next time I see him).

Thank you again.

300mg of seroquel is a hell of a lot for sleep - this might well be playing a role in your fatighe - could i suggest discontinuing this and trying a med like temazepam or Ambien CR which shouldnt have carry over effects the following day?

Thanks for your response.

I'd rather not start on temazepam because, from what I understand, it is a Benzodiazepine, and I suppose one could risk becoming addicted to it. I tried Ambien CR but it did nothing for me. Lunesta was helpful but my psychopharmacologist changed the sleeping medication to Seroquel as it is helpful for me in terms of sleep and it is FDA approved to boost the effectiveness of anti-depressants.

Has it raised the effectiveness of the Parnate?
It's difficult for me to say.

Thanks again.
