Benzodiazapines have been around forever. In all these years, how come we don't have a greater selection of anxiolytics? Surely there's been enough research done that some new drugs could've been developed. Or is Neurontin all we get?

Good question but seems like now the trend is antipsychotics which can cause all sorts of metabolic problems which benzos don't? Phillipa

What about Paxil and Effexor?
Maybe you can find something interesting here:

I don't really care for the drug that much, but Gabitril (tiagabine) is used for anxiety and insomnia sometimes. Results are variable. I'm sure that you know that it is a GABA reuptake inhibitor. I haven't yet seen any success stories here, but I don't think many doctors think to use Gabitril.
I think Linkadge would be in a good position to speculate what mechanisms would yield anxiolysis.

I have seen Phenergan (promethazine) produce robust anxiolytic effects. I would think it less likely to produce adverse metabolic effects. I don't know for sure, though.
With respect to neuroleptics, I guess Zyprexa and Seroquel would be the top picks for anxiety, although Abilify can work as well.

Is gabatril ever used as a mood stabilizer like topiramte? That is as a mild mood stabilizer?

I'm pretty sure someone has tried it. It didn't do a thing for my depression, but I can't attest to its potential to mitigate mania. I think you would hear more about it if it were, though. Just about every AED that comes out is screened as a mood-stabilizer by somebody.
I would just remind you that I observed someone with an irritable mixed-state hypomania respond robustly to topiramate 100 mg.

Antipsychotics are not anxiolytics and it bugs me to no end that they are prescribed as such. I've been on all the APs and the only one I'd recommend for anxiety is Seroquel. However, I would never recommend Seroquel over Ativan.

I have not tried Buspar. I have this suspicion it won't be strong enough for me. also, I'm bipolar and I don't want to risk cycling.
I become manic on Effexor, to the point of physical aggression.
I'm on Viibryd, so I don't see how Paxil would be any better for me.
Gabitril does not work for me in the Anxiety department.
What I've tried for anxiety so far:
Keppra (works well but makes me depressed)
Topomax (Unbeleivable paradoxical effects)
Neurontin (works but gave me a rash)
Gabitril (no effect)
Trileptal (works)
Zonegran (worked for both my ocd a general anxiety but caused agitation)
Lyrica (works, but very weak)Benzos (taken a wide variety. They work to treat my anxiety and panic symptoms, but not my OCD. The only drawback is paradoxical effects-Xanax turned me into a monster)
Prazosin (I feel better. Is this working?)
What I'm on now:
Lithium 1200mg
Latuda 80 mg
Viibryd 60 mg
Ativan 4 mg day/prnHave a good one.

Yes, I have encountered some case studies on the efficacy of Gabitril as a mood stabilizer

Phenergn sup had to use after surgery for vomiting. Interstingly I could then taste the sprite my neighbor had lent to husband. I thought strange at the time. But anxiety can't cause loss of taste and smell? Phillipa
