Long-term success with mirtazapine? Anyone?

Posted by sk85 on November 4, 2011, at 10:51:16

Hi! Does anyone here actually have or have had long-term success with mirtazapine (Remeron)? It seems that a lot of people report that it works for them briefly and then suddenly stops. I would like to avoid this situation because getting off the meds can be really stressful.
Also, if you have had success with it, did you use anything else to boost it? I know it's combined with SSRIs but I cant take the last ones, perhaps only tricyclics.

I can tell you that I suggested it to my father in law,and he is 66yrs old,has taken it for 2 yrs, loves it,hasnt gained weight,I think hes on 45mg per day.He has had depression/anxiety and I think he said he was even diagnosed as bipolar yrs ago. He also takes coumadin, but no other psych meds.I took remeron 15mg for awhile for sleep and it helped me adjust to zoloft.I had no trouble tapering it,and I still sometimes take a small amt for sleep.

In controlled studies it usualy comes out amoung the best antidepressants, because of its multiple modes of action. I'd try it and see.

Remember, the people on these sites (like me) are a small, self selected group, usualy who have failed multiple therepys - the people who have sucsess with a drug arnt hanging around these sites, they dont need them, thats why you hear of so many failiures and so few sucsesses here.

I took Mirtazapine for about 3 months and never experienced poop out. I used it to treat OCD and bipolar depression. It worked extremely well, but unfortunately made me manic-I had a hard time keeping my mood stable while I was on it. To augment my treatment with Mirtazapine I took Abilify, which is an AAP/AD. It boosted it too well.

If you can't take an SSRI with it, which I wouldn't recommend, I'd recoommend you try an AAP like Geodon, Abilify, Latuda or Seroquel.

Did not make you sleepy?? I can only imagine that you had developed tolerance to the antihistamine effect from some other med that you were perhaps taking at that time. Or the pills you were using did not contain proper mirtazapine. Mirtazapine is one of the most powerful hypnotics out there. Although it's fairly easy to develop tolerance to its sedative effect.

ive read that remeron provides a normal sleep pattern, doesnt affect your sex drive, and doesnt cause typical ssri side effects:nausea, headache, insomnia, etc. At 7.5mg,it helped pull me out of the worst episode of depression/anxiety ive had.

I'm happy with my combo of Remeron and Wellbutrin.

I agree with the above. Remeron is not a bad medication. I found that it worked when other medications did not, esp when I was in a place of feeling utterly depleated.

Anyhow, I never took high doses (beyond 15mg) and had positive effects.

No antihistamines just the chloral hydrate, valium, xanax, and think back to low dose luvox then. I had brand name remeron. Went to renew given a full sealed bottle of the 15mg and just never took it. Still in the cabinet. And the first doses were given in hospital different meds so couldn't have been bad? So strange. Phillipa

I think remeron has worked for my dad. He is also on an ssri and a mood stabilizer, as far as I know. But he has been on remeron for a long time, so it must be having some positive effect.

Me, on the other hand--I tried it for two weeks and was suicidal by the 15th day. I also thought about chocolate every second of the day. Except the ones where I was thinking about ice cream and pudding.

Also has anyone combined mirtazapine with low dose Seroquel? Was this in any way a good mix?

I use this combination at a low dose (15mg Mirtazapine and 100mg Seroquel) at night for insomnia. Doesn't do much for antidepressant effects, but I am able to get good quality of sleep that so much else hinges upon. For an antidepressant, I am tapering up on Viibryd at the moment.

Good luck,

Hi,

Yes, I have tried mirtazapine with a low dose of Seroquel.
It's not a good mix.

My problem has always been sleep,
and I thought that this combination of drugs could be the solution.

I slept well alright,
but I slept for too many hours.

I was very drowsy the next day.

It didn't take me many days to conclude that this combo of drugs is too sedating.

Now I'm on 45 mg of mirtazapine and 100 mg of Lyrica for sleep.

Best regards,
Peter Heuer

I concluded myself that this combination is too sedating at least when taking 45 mg mirtazapine + 50 mg Seroquel. Maybe the sluggishness wares off with time but seems to take forever this time, I need to be productive at the moment. I've decided to try instead 30 mg mirtazapine for anxiety/depression and add-in low dose Wellbutrin for removing any residual tiredness.
