When will the withdrawal side effects end!!!!!!!

Posted by NorthJacqueline on October 26, 2011, at 0:01:22

Hi everyone. I am a first time poster, and need help badly! I have been on Effexor for over a year, I take 150 mg daily, and have hated it for a long time. I just decided to go cold turkey. I have had all the symptoms that are listed in other posts, not feeling myself, brain shocks, tears (before I was void of any emotion) the eyes not following, heart racing, etc. But I think it's manageable with a bit of Lorazopam 10mg when I really need it.
Can anyone tell me how many more days I will have before I start to feel normal??? My last dose was Friday (although probably ineffective cause I had three glasses of red wine with dinner) and it's now Tuesday night.

Can anyone help me? Give me a ball park number???!!!!
Thanks

Are you tapering off effexor or did you stop completely?

Welcome to babble I've heard effexor is really hard to come off of. I'd taper and hopefully that will help. Oh you didn't mean l0mg of lorazepam did you was it lmg? As 10mg would be really a high dose. Is your doc helping you taper? Phillipa

I went cold turkey. My Doc is known in my small community as a bit of a pusher, but being new to the place I had no idea and just took the pills. She would never want me to go off in the first place. My husband is really supportive, so that helps. Yes, I think you're right, lmp- just a teeny pill that goes under the tongue. Today is a better day, but just feeling crappy :(

Today had been a better day, less brain shocks, but tears and still feeling weird...

cold turkey is the worst way to go off that stuff. Even with a slow taper I had withdrawal symptoms on other SSRI's, I can only imagine how bad youre feeling going from 150-0 on effexor like that.
Prozac might help with the withdrawal. Other than that, benadryl.

Really? Benedryl? What kind of dose? What does that do? Just flipped out on my husband, but was able to force myself to talk to him and let him know what I was feeling. Feel way better now after a cry. Weirdest thing though, I think I pooped myself......yeah, pooped. Think sexy 32 year old with uncontrollable bowels and mood swings. Yikes....

Benadryl does a small amount of SSRI on its own. The antihistamine action probably helps with anxiety and restlessness. No idea on dose.

Cold turkeying off Effexor is not a good idea. You will get horrible withdrawal symptoms for quite a while and quite possibly have to restart it just to end the withdrawal. You need to taper off your use slowly to minimize symptoms and give yourself a chance to end use successfully. There are guides for tapering you can find here and elsewhere on the net. Be well.

I could be wrong, but I get the impression that once triggered by abrupt discontinuation, the withdrawal symptoms tend to persist for a longer period of time than they would if one were to taper the drug gradually.

CT is a dangerous way of doing it.
Taper it slowly, preferably over a year or 18 months.
