A link please? I'm not sure what I can eat! My dietician in the hospital seemed like a moron. The lists I've found contradict each other. Some say I can have yogurt, others say it must be avoided. Some say I can have a little pizza, others say I will die. I've seen the list on Dr. Bob's site. I just don't know what to eat. Help.

For instance, I can't find a decent answer on whether or not I can eat sunflower seeds!!! Ugh...

Sunflower seeds. No problem.
I've had one tyramine reaction in over a decade on Nardil. I broke the rules bad that time.
Here's what I use:

Here's a great resource:

Regarding tap beer, lagers typically are the culprit.

Thanks for the resource. I wish my MD knew one tenth what Dr. Ken Gillman knows about MAOIs.

PS Thanks for the compliment Phillipa. After years on clonazepam, I've forgot everything I once knew! Thank goodness for Google.

Lepus,
I have been wondering how things were going for you. What maoi are you taking?
I am still on Emsam. After much drama, it may be here to stay....
Good to see your post.

Hi FB!
I am on Nardil, also after much drama. Not certain if it is here to stay. I'm not sure I can tolerate the hypotension. I have POTS anyway. Nothing really seems to be well tolerated by my body. Trying not to lose hope but, well...I am kind of losing hope.
Sorry to hear you've had drama. I haven't been keeping up with the boards much since I'm so consumed with trying to get better and then was also hospitalized. No Wifi on a psych ward. :( No cellphones either. Stinks.

Thanks for the great links, everyone! I knew if I asked Babblers I would get some helpful information!
Amazing how we seem to know more than the people treating us...

Is canned tunafish safe? Ugh! My dietician sucked and I'm so tired I'm having trouble sorting this out...
What about pea pods? Dietician said yes, literature says no in places.
Sorry for all the questions. The diet is difficult to navigate when your brain is fried from the depression/anxiety and when you're just plain scared.

I think you are blowing this out of proportion to the danger. It is your life, so better safe than sorry. Read that article by Dr. Gillman. Very informative.
Good Luck,

Read that PDF file posted by (someone?). It is really good. The MAOI diet really isn't that hard. You're not going to die from eating a slice of pepperoni pizza. Most foods are fine. Tuna, almost all vegetables except fava beans (and you have to eat a lot to get enough tyramine to cause a problem and who eats fava beans anyway) and sauerkraut (again, you have to have a lot and who eats sauerkraut except for a small amount in a Reuben?) all this stuff is fine. It's not complicated. Avoid large quantities of aged cheese (more than an ounce). Avoid salami and pepperoni in large quantities ( a slice of pepperoni pizza will not kill you). Avoid red wine and draft beer. Other than that, there's not much to worry about. Soy sauce -- don't have more than a quarter cup, but when would you? Avoid miso soup. Don't stress. I have hardly changed my diet at all since I started parnate two years ago. I am a bit more conscious of limiting cheddar cheese as a snack and blue cheese on salads and parmesan on pasta. But I haven't given these up entirely because small portions don't contain large amounts of tyramine.
When I started on parnate, I said to my p-doc, well I could just get a bottle of chianti and some salami and cheese and check out. He says, it doesn't work like that. These are cautions, not absolutes. If they were absolutes, nobody would ever precscribe MAOIs.

Thanks for the info. I'm afraid my dietician in the hospital really started to scare me. She was so strict. No broth, no lunch meats, no cheese of any kind, etc. I don't think she had much experience with MAOIs, if any. This happened at one of the best psych hospitals in America too. Ridiculous. I will ease up and try to relax.
Thanks for the info, everyone.
This is the end of the thread.
