L-Methylfolate and L-Tryptophan

Posted by lizvb on June 1, 2011, at 19:15:42

I've tried numerous anti-depressants for treatment for life-long depression ranging from moderate to crippling.

I've had a wide range of side-effects from mild to moderate, but I have never had a single positive effect. Most recently I took Lexapro for several months and found that I was sort of emotionally dead -not feeling the horrible sadness but never having a good day either. I was unable to feel much of anything at all. My County Psychiatrist considered that a sign that the Lexapro was "working" .

Frustrated, I stopped taking everything. I've been trying L-Tryptophan but am now curious about Deplin.

I am wondering if anyone has experience (good or bad) with
1) Over-the-counter L-Methylfolate (vs. Rx for Deplin)
2) Combining either of the above with L-Tryptophan

I am currently not taking any other meds. Unfortunately, I do not have insurance and I'm limited to County Psychiatrists so I'm sort of on my own to research alternates to the crappy stuff they have prescribed to me.

Unfortunatly antidepressant drugs dont help everybody who is unhappy - you might be suffering from a personality disorder for example, rather than major depression.

Have you ever tried an SSRI for example Zoloft combined with an NARI, for example nortriptyline or bupropion? This can sometimes give an added kick to the regimen.

Some of the new atypical antipsychotics have been shown to help in low doseages as well - I have found risperidone 1mg at night of great benifit

I have tried Zoloft but not nortriptyline or bupropion. Zoloft-type medications cause lots of anxiety and even panic attacks. I have been prescribed various combinations of stuff but having never seen a single positive (even mediocre) response, it's hard to keep trying them. One new side effect I seem to get is very dry eyes. I've had this response to Wellbutrin, Lamictal, Lexapro and Trazodone. The doctor thought I was making it up, but even skipping one day's dose made it better.

Along with depression, I have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. I was attending a DBT group for that, but find that I am not a very good participant and get nothing from the sessions. Ditto for individual therapy - I have never had a positive thing come from any of it. Nothing.

I'm hoping that I can find medication (natural or otherwise) that will put me in a better state of mind so that therapy might begin to help. I've been on disability for nearly a year and if anything, I feel worse.

Use the search at the bottom of main page for my many entries on Deplin.

Lamictal with Deplin has been a godsend for me. Lamictal takes a while but with the Deplin I'm so much better now. Good luck
