First of all, I am sorry for posting so much today but I need to distract myself. I can't read without thinking about all the sh*t going on in my life, but I can read posts here and respond and it keeps the bad thoughts away.
So, my pdoc prescribed Adderall XR for me but it is not covered under the Provincial medical plan and I cannot afford to buy it.
So then after making some posts here, I have decided that Dexedrine Spansules would be best for me because I had no luck with Ritalin and I have the scars to prove it. But then I started to think about desipramine and how it could replace my Nortrip which I believe is causing weight gain.
So which path should I follow? I know that Nortrip. does help (of course you wouldn't know it with everything that is going on). But I thought that maybe the Desipramine would be better because it is supposed to be activating and cause less weight gain than Nortrip.
What should I do? I am leaning towards the Dexedrine.

Maxime:
How are you today? I think I know about the scars you wrote about. Please keep posting. I have had so much going on in my life too, and have not been on this web site in so long and was so depressed and just came back on here recently and am so glad to be back. Please keep posting. I think a lot of us know about trying to keep the bad thoughts away, and people here understand so stay posting and reading and distracting. Babblemail me anytime.
Also, I was coming on to write about my weird experience with stims and also took notrip, and know everyone's chemistry is different, but I will tell you what I am doing now though I don't know if it will help. I don't know about desipramine, but I was going to ask my pdoc about dexedrine this week. Again, everyone's bodies are so different (I gained a lot of weight on medication too and don't want to anymore, and my pdoc is conscious of that thankfully). I think ritalin is in a different family than dexedrine, I may be wrong. I think adderal and dex are in the same family, as well as vyvanse. I take vyvanse which is longer lasting, maybe like adderall xr? Dex may be shorter acting. Please post how you are doing or write me personally. I have a small baby who keeps me busy but is currently napping so I am here, and I will always try to get back here to write back. Keep posting! Keep distracting, then when that roller coaster/life goes back up, you will have distracted yourself right on through it. Stay on here, I believe this is a great site to not feel alone, and to feel understood. Be well, Cydnie

I think that desipramine would be similar to nortriptyline. The main side effects that it is known to have are constipation, dry mouth, arrythmia, and trouble sleeping. You probably would not put on weight with this drug.
Hope that is helpful. That is just what i've read about those drugs, I've never been able to take at TCA but i would like to try one of those two. Do you noticed any cognitive improvements on nort?

Desipramine is very different from nortriptyline. Desipramine is an ultra-potent NRI (noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor). Nortriptyline is only moderately strong as an NRI. Nortriptyline is also sedating, which desipramine is not. Desipramine is therefore more activating and is in fact sometimes used for treating ADD and the like. Side-effects like tachycardia (fast heartbeat) are more likely with desipramine. Nortriptyline, finally, also works on serotonin in high doses (SRI), which desipramine does not. Oh, and nortriptyline promotes deep sleep, which desipramine does not.

If you go on askapatient here...
http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=73553&name=NORTRIPTYLINE%20HCL
...you can see a couple columns down that even nortriptyline helped with someones adhd and increased memory despite anticholinergic effects.
I've also seen reviews where desipramine helped some users with adhd and memory here.

Okeedokee.
BTW, before I forget, nortriptryline is an anxiety buster too, which desipramine is not.

My Pdoc decided to go with Dexedrine for now. I think it was the decision ... I hope it was.
