Hi!
During the last four years I have tried ~25 drugs for my treatment resistant atypical depression and severe social phobia.
Except for benzos which help with anxiety (but leave me unmotivated) none of the medications helped me, altough I tolerated them well.
After reading a lot about MAOIs I had/have? very big hopes that Parnate could be my way out of depression and anxiety.
I take Parnate since 10 days (30mg). I know that's early, but I expected it to give me energy fast.... instead it produces strong day time sedation.
Has anybody else experienced that? Will this side effect likely vanish with time? Maybe when the dosage gets increased over time? Is it ok to take Parnate ~2 hours before bedtime if it makes me soo tired?
In my country it's very hard to get stimulants, and already being on a MAOI does really not make it easier to talk a Pdoc into prescribing eg. Ritalin or even just Modafinil.
Thanks you very much!

I had the same reaction. When I took parnate, I could barely stay awake for a few hours. It was an extremely strong sedative. I think some people have this reaction. For some people the sedation lessens or disappears, but I had it the entire time I used parnate, even at higher doses, although it was reduced the more I used.
Maybe you could try another Maoi. I use emsam, and don't have any difficulty with sedation.

Some people get a lot of sedation when taking Parnate. For some people it wears off in time. Have you tried Nardil? Nardil is more sedating than Parnate, but maybe the opposite would happen for you.

Unluckily Nardil and Emsam are not available in my country, just tranylcypromine.
I will try taking the 30mg Parnate two hours before going to bed tomorrow. If the drug works for SA & depression, but the sedation persists for the next weeks I'll beg my Pdoc for Modafinil or Ritalin.

May I ask what your country name is? Maybe some other meds available there that others know of. Welcome to babble. Phillipa

Hi Phillipa!
It's Austria (Europe).

Guess what I've visited there and it's beautiful country with fields and mountains visible from the airplanes. Freud's house is also in Vienna. I'm sure you alread know. But lovely country one of my favorites. Phillipa

Parnate caused me to have insomnia where I wouldn't sleep 2-3 nights in a row and still wouldn't be tired during the day, as if I were speeding on amphetamines. So I didn't have your experience. I need to take parnate early in the day to try to minimize insomnia. I don't know what other people's experience have been, but I know that parnate tends to have a stimulating, amphetamine-like impact on most users.
