Dry mouth side effect

Posted by MoBe on April 12, 2010, at 15:31:02

I finally got the remeron down to 4 mg and still gives excellent sleep results, but now I seem to have developed an odd feeling in my mouth. Went to see a periodontist and he said my mouth isn't really dry. It actually feels swollen; but this specialist also said the gums look healthy to him. I've tried to discontinue the mirtazapine and am now looking at the 4th day of compromised sleep. Anyone out there on a similar amount of this drug with any success solving the mouth side effects.

Never had the problem myself, but a friend told me she found some Biotene products helpful. I think they make chewing gum, mouth rinses, etc. for people with dry mouth. Might be worth trying.

I think I've tried most things on the market including Biotene products. Are you using 4 mg Remeron or mirtazapine?

I'm not using either of those myself. My friend's dry mouth is from elavil. I don't think the Biotene products completely eliminate it but she made it sound like they helped somewhat. You didn't mention trying anything, so I thought you might not be aware of their existence. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Yes, I do have anxiety. I should try an experiment in observing myself during a period when my anxiety has been reduced. I don't think the Remeron can cause anxiety. However, I also take methylphenidate 10 mg three times a day. It would be really too bad if it was the methylphenidate because it really helps my ADD.

That's very interesting how you found out about the anxiety causing the dry mouth - almost serendipidy - the happy accident. I wonder if there is a medication out there that can help with ADD without contributing to anxiety? I don't have benzos in the mediciine cabinet. I'd have to take something that I could get my hands on without a prescription.

Thanks for your insight.

Sure you don't have Sjogren's Syndrome???

I got it after taking Sarotex for a while. It really dried my mouth (and later eyes too) out. It got so painful I had to quit taking it. A little later I was diagnosed with Sjogren's ... and to date, more than 10 years later I still have this.

Never found out if Sarotex was the culprit or that I already had Sjogren's latently in my body...

I sure hope you don't have this.

>My doctor actually checked me for Sjogren's Syndrom and the blood test turned out negative. I met a lady in one of my Diabetes classes that did have this disorder and she even had to wear special glasses because her eyes hurt so much. I think a big challenge up front is to get a diagnoses. I am sorry to hear that you have it - I have read that taking high dose omega 3 supplements helps both the dry eyes and the dry mouth. I am a vegetarian, so I would have to do it the flax oil, walnuts etc way, but if you eat fish you could perhaps take fish oil supplements. Be sure to get the ones that don't repeat the fish oil taste - I beleive they are enteric coated. Good luck with your treatment and thank you for sharing your story.

Risperdal makes my mouth so dry that I can barely speak without first making an effort to moisten it. My tongue sticks to the top of my mouth.

In general I do have dry mouth, for whatever reason.

My ENT suggests drinking lots of water with a bit of lemon squeezed in it. And chewing gum. I chew lots of gum, even when I'm not taking risperdal, because of dry mouth.

The risperdal reduces my anxiety so I don't think anxiety is a factor.
