Went to a State Hospital today..

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on February 28, 2010, at 1:43:00

Terrell State Hospital..just look it up. It's an older psychiatric hospital that's been around since 1885, which oringally was for the insane, but things where modified in the later future of Texas's mental health act's to help mental illness. It..i didnt go through the hospital but it was very large, and had alot of abandoned psych unit's that where intresting to see but they don't allow people in there, only staff personel for special use.

The doctor was...she asked me why the heck did you drive 75miles out here when there's other hospital's. I said...i researched this hospital and I thought it would be a good place because it's got alot of experience over the years. It wasa an insane asylum but they changed that term in 1925 to "mental health hospital's" and had more research for treating it as time has passed and cases are recorded and medication has came out. She told me "you are 22, you are living like a teenager, you need to start from there and move out like most 18 years olds have, and your mother shouldnt have access to your medical records" we'll that's parahrasing but...that's basically what was told to me.

Anyway's...it's nice to know there is somewhere to go but once they have determined that you have to stay due to medical reasons, it's no telling when your going to be released.

Though this was intresting today...but my parent's got really pissed and said a "institution??" are your crazy? we'll that's what it's there for...

Anyway's it's intresting to see older treatment psychiatry still in use, but it's a bit harsh.

:)

Did they change any of your meds?

The doctor is right, you should move out and your mum shouldn't have access to what you are taking. Do you think you could do that?

Glad you had a good experience even though you had to drive that far to have one.

We'll...it was a bit intimidating there because they....first asked me what are on? and then asked me why did you drive this far out here? See if i got an additude, they would of considered that a threat and kept me there. So I tried to stay as nice as possible. I thought it would be an old hospital with older doctor's from the 1950's and back....nope, it's modern but there are alot of buildings that are really old and ruined.

She gave me a list of referrences to call, I told her..just my mother knows how to manipulate treatment, and the reasons she had a say so in the doctor was because she was around when I abused my medication [adderall] and knew exactly what to say. I didnt want to ask them about medication because they looked really intimidating, and I didnt really have anything to ask. They had alot of nuerotropic medication ad's like Seroquel, Abilift, some other older ones. They told me to come back if I saw things that where not there, harm myself, or harm someone else...and they usally are there for that kind of sitatation, usally in court's people are referred there in case of insanity.

Next time...i cannot tell my mom where I went, they just said "tell her you went to go get help" i came home and it's like a sin to go get help.

I just am going, I hate to say i'm going to do something and not do it because i'm prone to do that [procrastinate] then get in sorrow of how bad life is.

But it was an intersting visit, I was hoping they would just maybe write a scipt for haldol or something because i've just been thinking too much and need these thoughts to be sedated, but it was too much of a risk to stay there, if I asked them that.

They had ad's for schizophrenia and say "paranoid, thinking people are talking about you" we'll sometimes it's true because alot of care comes out of someone's mouth but they go after gossip, so just act like you don't care ... and deal with whatever gossip that is harful to you and get it striaghtned out.

phillipa, you know when I first got there, i walked around and looked at all the old buildings that used to be for the insane. But they abandonded those and looked like it was for other use. But I didnt want to just stand around and look because they have camera's watching [that's what I thought] so I just went to the admissions building and waited for 2 hours.

It's a BIG site, lot's of acres that was oringally bought for large amount's of space. I didnt see the secure unit's and I read that's where severe cases are.

What hospital did you go to?
