Post exercise depression

Posted by rculater on February 11, 2010, at 14:53:50

I have realised lately that I am crashing after exercise. About 15 minutes after a workout I become very irritable, angry, moody, depressed and suffer insomnia. The mood continues 1 -2 days after. Currently on no meds. I found the below link. There are hundreds of posts there. This goes against what we have been told for years that exercise helps mood. Any one care to comment as to the reason so many are experiencing "Post exercise depression"

Maybe it has something to do with cortisol levels/adrenals???

That sucks you are experiencing this.

Back and read quite a few of the threads on the link. Seems like many feel it's blood sugar related. For me always wired for short time later than relax for a while and build up reserves. Other thing is I've always wanted to excercise in the am and my body says evening and outside. Age has decreased my ability to do what I loved and that was running and as long as I ran three or four times a week and only a couple miles was great. Now it's bike riding and definitely not the same and I now feel tired. When younger I could teach an aerobic classes, run at noon and then choreograph new routines in the evening so for me age plays a big part. Phillipa

do you have an eating disorder? or bipolar disorder? because I have this too and Lamictal or any bipolar med that matter helped. Plus I have an eating disorder, and as Im slowly getting over that I am having less and less of this happening to me. I am actually using exercise to my benefit these days. Its actually helping my anxiety!!! cool right??? it hasnt in like 3 years now.

Maybe eating something healthy withing 30 mins post exercise would help.

What is your diet like?

Are you on any medication right now?

Is your sex life good? Awkward question I know but sex and having a good healthy libido can help a lot of things.

Do you think the weights are giving you a testosterone boost that is interfering with your mood?

What about doing moderate to intense cardio after you lift and follow it up with a 20 minute meditative stretch?

The first thing that came to my mind is "where is the exercising taking place?" For me, I need a lot of fresh air. In the winter time I am forced indoors, but I still try to walk around the block a couple of times a day. The brain/body needs fresh oxygen to function optimally.

I also exercise mid-morning, and that seems to wake me up. If I work out later in the day it acts as a stimulant and I can display some of symptoms you listed.

Since I started working out at least 5 times a week 2 years ago I have never felt better. Though I suffer from chronic pain, the workouts at least help my body stand-up to the negative effects of my disease. Try to find out what is going on, the last thing you want to do is curtail your exercise...assuming that you are not overdoing it now.
