Few things i want to inclide in this post, first i want to mention a med called CAMPREL,although oddly it is soley inicated for alcholoism i still found its pharmocology to be exciting.
It treats neuro toxxicty by its effect of modulating, keeping a balance of glutamte-gaba.
And thats it lol,no deeper action, clean and direct. My view was how can this not be a benifit to psych meds.I did see in japan they use it for all mental disorders.
Anyone being on it two weeks now,i have been told im much better,im 89 percent more pro social, depression seems to have lost its ability to stick, and im very calm.
The change was so dramatic my friend took it as well, she did so because its data sheet states the drug has about ZERO INTERACTIONS,as well as achlol having no effect on its action, nor sedatives, and vice versa.
Here is a snip
"The mechanism of action of acamprosate in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition. In vitro and in vivo studies in animals have provided evidence to suggest acamprosate may interact with glutamate and GABA neurotransmitter systems centrally, and has led to the hypothesis that acamprosate restores this balance"

Here is a snip,
"Gabren - General Information:
Gabren is an analog and prodrug of gamma-aminobutyric acid. It is commonly used in the treatment of epilepsy. It has agonistic activity for both the GABAA and GABAB receptors. Gabren has been investigated for many diseases besides epilepsy, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, clinical depression and anxiety disorder with varying success"source http://www.flexyx.com/G/Gabren.html
PHENIBUT
snip,
"Beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid, better known as Phenibut or less commonly Fenibut or Phenybut, is natural derivative of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA (Gamma amino butyric acid). Sold as a dietary supplement in the US while in Russia sold as a neuropsychotropic drug that is capable of passing the blood-brain barrier. Phenibut is cited as a nootropic for its ability to improve neurological functions. It was discovered in Russia in the 1960s, and has since been used there to treat a wide range of ailments including anxiety and insomnia.
The name Phenibut, along with many of the other names for the compound, comes directly from the chemical name for the compound, beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid."

In reply to gaba gaba gaba !, posted by willey on January 3, 2010, at 3:37:14
Willey - So interesting, thanks for posting that! I don't think I've ever tried anything that targets GABA (does Lamictal work on GABA?).
I came across dialogue indicating success of yet another drug designed to assist in alcohol withdrawal: naltrexone (Revia). (Post is old so don't know if the drug is still available.)
Anyone who have PDocs who try these remedies-regardless of whether or not you have or have had problems with alcohol?
Are they addictive by any chance?

"This phenomena of the SSRI "poop out" can usually be reversed by adding 25 mg of naltrexone (marketed in the US as Revia), usually on top of supper to avoid transient nausea. In anywhere from two weeks to five of once daily dosing the SSRI regains the full effect and often is perceived as working better than it did at first. I have done this in over forty cases where this has been most gratifying. At this dose of naltrexone the incidence of side effects is very low, and the improvement is sustained over a period of years. It has been the end of poop out in my practice."

Thanks for reading, and yess lamictal does increase gaba, how INDIRECTLY.What this means is it attacks so to say the opsing enemy chemical of gaba which is glutame,by blocking it,theraby in time letting gaba increase.
Nueroprotective drugs, drugs that protect the brain are,
gaba increasing or protecing meds, and NMDA blocking meds.
Lamictal would be i am almost sure a nmda inhibitor.
This is of course the simpliest way of describing it,lol a bit more to it,but gaba meds can work by direct, and indirect actions.

The excitment i had in campral had nothing to do with alholol withdraw,i wouldent drink even off meds i dont like sleeping on the bathroom floor lol.
I was drawn to camprel simply because of its pharm actions, they were similiar to the ones we have in our meds, ony simplier, cleaner, and safer.
This is the end of the thread.
