I am being investigated for Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Does anyone here have TLE and can they describe the differences in their thinking on and off medications?

Hello Phidippus,
Welcome to Psycho-Babble. I don't have temporal lobe epilepsy (at least I hope not) but I just wanted to welcome you. Feel free to post on any of the boards. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here and I hope someone will be able to help you.
I'm interesting in knowing what temporal lobe epilepsy is and I'll be coming back to this thread to read more about it.

Thanks, Deneb! Temporal Lobe Epilepsy is a type of electrical dysfunction of the brain that effects any part of the Temporal Lobes and may effect vision, hearing, memory and affect. People with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy are sometimes misdiagnosed as having psychiatric illness, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or ADHD. Temporal Lobe Epilepsy is treated with anticonvulsants.

Thanks for that info! It sounds like it might be hard to tell the difference between temporal lobe epilepsy and psychiatric illness at times because mood and memory can be affected in both.
I hope you get the right diagnosis quickly and get on the right treatment. What kind of symptoms do you have?

Headaches that make my thoughts feel unreal. I had two seizures this past year. I also get strange feelings, thoughts and obsessions. I'm currently treated with Dexedrine, Lithium and Lexapro and I'm trying to find the right anticonvulsant-currently trialing Keppra.

Tegretol (and now Tripletal) handle TLE quite nicely, no thought or mood disturbances at all.I get a fair amount of deja vu with feelings of unreality, my pdoc said it's just anxiety related, but you have to wonder how much neurology and psychiatry overlap

Do you ever get feelings you are unreal or that your thoughts are unreal?

I was diagnosed was psychomotor or temporal lobe epilepsy in 1986 after a car accident ( I thought my seizure was either caused from a super high dose of trazodone or the tons of ECT that I had just prior). I took Tegretol for about two years and it didn't have any negative side effects on my thinking that I can recall. I went off the trazodone and onto another antidepressant and then went off Tegretol (EEG was normal) and never had another seizure again and haven't been on an anticonvulsant since except for trying Lamictal once, but I have depression and anxiety too so I've always been on an antidepressant and I think serotonin somehow comes into play in controling seizures.
The MAOI's work the best for my depression as well as my for my constant fear anxiety panic (not situational) which maybe the temporal lobe firing. I recently went I Tegretol because I started to get that same sheer terror and fear all of a sudden and felt like I was going to have a seizure. I'm not sure why after all of these years I felt like I was going to have a seizure.
The tegretol hasn't dampened my thinking at all and I know the Tegretol has a tricylcic ring struture in it similar to the tricylic antidepressants. I may try some more seizure medications in the near future and will be able to answer your question better then.

Yes, and it is quite terrifying. Like I said, Trileptal takes it away 100%
This is the end of the thread.
