In reply to Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, on and off meds?, posted by Phidippus on October 21, 2009, at 22:58:01
I was diagnosed was psychomotor or temporal lobe epilepsy in 1986 after a car accident ( I thought my seizure was either caused from a super high dose of trazodone or the tons of ECT that I had just prior). I took Tegretol for about two years and it didn't have any negative side effects on my thinking that I can recall. I went off the trazodone and onto another antidepressant and then went off Tegretol (EEG was normal) and never had another seizure again and haven't been on an anticonvulsant since except for trying Lamictal once, but I have depression and anxiety too so I've always been on an antidepressant and I think serotonin somehow comes into play in controling seizures.
The MAOI's work the best for my depression as well as my for my constant fear anxiety panic (not situational) which maybe the temporal lobe firing. I recently went I Tegretol because I started to get that same sheer terror and fear all of a sudden and felt like I was going to have a seizure. I'm not sure why after all of these years I felt like I was going to have a seizure.
The tegretol hasn't dampened my thinking at all and I know the Tegretol has a tricylcic ring struture in it similar to the tricylic antidepressants. I may try some more seizure medications in the near future and will be able to answer your question better then.
