Hi,
that may sound like a stupid exaggerated question, 'cause I don't even know if parnate would help, but soon I'll begin my trial of parnate and I'm already very anxious about that it will help but poop out after 1-3years.. then I'd be left with nothing :(
Maybe I'll get a worse crisis in my life later (already had a much worse one ~8years ago) and I fear that I would have used up the mightiest tool I'd ever have by then :(
Still this now is a very critical time for me in my life (still no education, no job..) and I really need something very effective NOW, because I'm not able to function properly enough.
I'm afraid of meeting people, going to university, being at home whole day, ruminating thoughts of guilt + other obsessions and a general lack of energy + constant feelings of "physical fear" + being stressed by nothing.
This is disabling, but it could be even worse (as I already experienced when I had a major dep + my ocd was occupying 99% of my time/day for years)!
What do you think? When someone gets into remission/near remission using a MAOI and they stop the medication after about 1 year..
Is it likely that a MAOI would work again if, let's say, in about 2 years later they'd relapse and experience another episode?I quite often read -when doing a search on babble- that parnate and nardil poop out and that it never worked again. Is that true for the majority?
I also read about the "ssri carousel" quite often on the net: One ssri previously working poops out, you get switched to another one or even an agent of a different class and later when you switch back to the ssri you were taking initially it would work again.
Is this true with MAOIs too? Or is it only working the 1st time for the majority of people?
Thanks a lot for any info, very appreciated!!

Sorry I was talking nonsense, didn't want to scare anyone off:
"I quite often read -when doing a search on babble- that parnate and nardil poop out and that it never worked again. Is that true for the majority?"It shouldn't have been "quite often", rather "few". sorry!!
Also some pointing out that it never worked "the same" again as the first time..
What does this mean? Maybe is it regarding to the initial stimulating effects only and the antidepressant effects working nonetheless?Thank you!

I'll be curious to hear what others have to say, but I think MAOIs might be the least apt to produce a complete loss of responsiveness to subsequent treatments using them. One of my doctors used to switch back and forth between Parnate and Nardil to treat one of his patients. Another one would have some of his patients discontinue Nardil for 3 months after they developed poop-out. It would regain its effectiveness after the "drug holiday".

Hi Scott,
That's very interesting and sounds quite reassuring!
Could you please also tell me when the side effects usually started for you?
Especially the hypotension and insomnia.. will it begin almost immediately on the very first day (if dose high enough) or does it need time to disable most of the MAO first? Thanks a lot!!

> Especially the hypotension and insomnia.. will it begin almost immediately on the very first day (if dose high enough) or does it need time to disable most of the MAO first? It has been my experience that the hypotension produced by MAOIs is dose-dependent. With Nardil, I begin to experience it at a dosage of 60mg, and there remains some risidual effects despite the passage of time. With Parnate, the dosage is 50mg, and it subsides a great deal over time.
Believe it or not, I don't think it is well understood why MAOIs produce hypotension. There may be some central inhibition of vasomotor centers, but I don't know the specifics. It doesn't appear to be due to peripheral NE alpha-1 blockade.

Sunbath what a great question the original one as this I've always wondered about myself. Not plannning on one but what does one do when the poop out, and the others have failed, and some also have had ECT. Phillipa
