parnate and insomnia?

Posted by emmanuel98 on September 2, 2009, at 2:45:33

I am having worsening insomnia since I started on parnate. Has this been a problem for anyone else? What did you do about it?

I will be very interested to see what others have to say about this since I am considering a parnate trial but am scared to death of insomnia.
Hope others post.

me too..

I'm already taking 150mg trazodone retard + 20mg amitriptyline without being on parnate to let me sleep.. I wonder what I will have to take when I'm (if a pdoc will prescribe it to me) on parnate..

Emmanuel: Do you take parnate as monotherapy? If so you could for example ask your doc about prescribing low dose trazodone, seroquel, amitriptylin or doxepine. I think either option would probably make you sleep again..

Good luck!!

from what i understand (well, hope, anyway), the insomnia abates with time. i picked up my Parnate prescription yesterday but have actually been too scared to start taking it due to the insomnia issue. i do have some low-dose Seroquel as a standby. silly, i know, since i fought so hard to get it prescribed. i think part of my self-destructive personality doesn't want me in remission

I am taking trilafon with the parnate and my p-doc suggested that I take an extra dose at night, which helped last night a lot. The insomnia was pretty bad and I was worried because otherwise parnate is great - no other side effects, works like a charm for a really bad depression. Trazadone is not supposed to be mixed with parnate, so I can't take that for insomnia.

Hi,

is this something specific to parnate?
Otherwise, the article in current psychiatry vol 1 no.6/june 2002 someone mentioned in an earlier thread suggests that trazodone could be used safely to treat MAOI induced insomnia.
I really hope that it's true, because if I was going to try parnate I'd have to take trazodone with it 'cause I'm using it since more than 2 years and I've become somewhat dependend on it..

here some quick links to medline results:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2708555?ordinalpos=6&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum

the abstracts don't mention parnate in particular though..

I've had very bad insomnia for the last 10 years and have tried pretty much everything out there without results, except Ambien, which worked great for a month and then stopped.

I started Parnate 3 weeks ago. I'm not entirely sure if it's making the insomnia "worse", since it was pretty bad to begin with. The only difference I do notice is that I don't feel tired the next day even if I only slept 2-3 hours. Before, I used to just nap like crazy and sleep the whole day. But not anymore on Parnate. Well, at least so far..

Last night I went to bed at 2am and by 4:30am I was up and ready to go. This was after not sleeping for the last 24 hours. Very strange.

That's how parnate, without the trilafon, worked for me. No sleep, but wide awake all day, no naps. But after 48 hours with no sleep, I felt, psychologically done in. I don't like being up when my husband and the whole world are asleep. With the trilafon, I started sleeping normally -- down at 11:30, up at 6:00-7:00. This feels much healhier emotionally.

Insomnia due to Parnate can be helped by taking 50mg - 75mg nortriptyline in the evening. Or perhaps 10mg doxepin

I take 50mg (sometimes 75mg) Nortriptyline at 7pm and I have not had one bit of insomnia from Parnate.

The Parnate also seems to neutralize the usual side effects of Nortrip like carb hunger.

I am going to increase my Parnate to 70mg. and hope it doesn't cause insomnia. But, so far, so good! The nortriptyline is great, even though I also take 200mg/day Provigil. No insomnia!
