Amineptine vs. Ritalin / Adderall

Posted by uncouth on May 6, 2009, at 16:34:44

Ok , since i'm posting way too much on this board and my depression is becoming my hobby (NOT GOOD) this is the only posting I will make today.

But, I am curious, what is the difference between amineptine and ritalin/adderall? I know they both work on Dopamine, but why isn't ritalin / adderall used as an antidepressant, and amineptine is (theoretically, I know its off the market now). Aren't they all dopamine reuptake inhibitors?

Pls explain.

Rit and amphetamine are monoamine releasers too. This can tend to deplete monoamine stores and worsen depression over time.

Amineptine is more of a pure DRI, although it has been withdrawn as an antidepressant as it still apparently has abuse potential.

yeah, but i heard the abuse potential is limited and it was a bit of a panicy decision...people abusing it by dosing 20x the recommended. i don't think it's abusable/addictive like cocaine or something of the like. i can't believe it would be any more abusable or addicting than ritalin or adderall, and those are certainly around.

there's a source online that is selling custom synthesized amineptine, and depending on how my trial of it goes for my own depression, i'm considering getting some bulk quantities custom synthesized myself. i mean, if it works as well as people say it does, and isn't dangerous to some reasonable degree, people who need it should be able to get it...people's entire lives depend on the availability of effective antidepressants.

we shall see though.

Well, aren't all the SSRIs serotonin reuptake inhibitors? Why then would one work great for someone while all the others don't?

No two meds do the same thing. Even generic versions of the same exact med don't behave the same. The primitive way we view these meds is only a tiny fraction of what they actually do, most of which we don't know.

For example, without details, Med A will increase serotonin in the brain stem and cortex. Med B will increase serotonin in the cortex and mid brain. Med C will increase serotonin globally. All of them increase serotonin in different regions of the brain depending on the size of the dose. Ya know? In addition, they each have their own fingerprint in turning a variety of genes up and turning a variety of genes down, and they interact with the hormone system and the immune system, all of which tie into the overall wellness or badness felt by the user. It just aint that simple to say a drug does this or that in terms of which neurotransmitter it prevents the reuptake of.

I'd be curious about the effect of low dose Ritalin plus low dose Dexedrine.

It's out of the question here though.
