You know, I'm just to the point where I don't think anything actually works. It seems like there is no consistancy with any med whether its ssris or maoi's. I was reading some post on another web-site (patientslikeme.com) and I don't see any real positives there either on maois.
Seems like you go through the same thing with them to and then they poop out on you also. On here, maoi-wowee had pooped out on his maoi and has now been through all of them.
Not sure what to do anymore. Was getting my hopes up about trying an maoi, but am now not sure I want to even bother. They seem like they have their evil side just like other meds.
Need to figure something out. Tried going it alone with only xanax, but anxieties came flying back with a vengence.
Is there anyone out there who was ever able to stop all their meds after a awhile and be ok? Or do the meds do permanent damage so that you always have to take them?

Yes....
2006, went off all medications, exept Clonazepam, for PRN.
The main reasons of Medication are to treat whatever your going through. But also, there is awareness of why, "X thinks like this". It's basically programmed into the mind, nothing will work. Don't ever allow that to take control of the mind, because it can just lead downspiral.
You have to have hope, and not putting "faith" into something, this will make me better. If the mind relies only on a substance, that's it's master. Being aware of toxic thoughts, that where created, usally by events that happened, and there seemed no solution to get out of them.
I'm just giving my view, of 4-5 years of this. Yet, alot of people don't understand, so no replies.
I do give thank you, to Phillipa, she is always there.
More, if you see a post, that you can relate, and give advice, working with others, you can get to the core root[s] of your distress.
But, back, went off medications and it basically destroyed quality of even waking up, being alive. In percepective, my own past.
i hope what i write is understandable, because i want no one to go what i've been through the past year.
Sometimes, you have to confort yourself, and make logical reasons why? it can help. And i hope, something will help you.
take care

Courtney, Ive responded to your patientslikeme post...ive posted positives there missy :oP
Like I was saying...try not to let other peoples experiences prevent you from trying something out for yourself. Lets say you don't take that step (don't bother with meds at all)...you continue on your way unmedicated, when you should be?, then where are you?....still feelin like sh*t right? or...you try and you find a med that works and you get relief...if it continues for any length of time youve only benefited no? even if it "poops out" you switch then go back again later or augment the one that worked. Key is you need to just TRY :o)

Well hate to say this but my pdoc kind of said the same thing. In a way meds help you through a difficult time if you believe they will work. Believe is the key word. I do know what you mean. Both my Daughter and Son and ex-husband were on ad's for short period of time and successfully stopped them. They just didn't need them. Now it's about four years later both are med free. But that is them. I seem to not need as many benzos. Wierd as thought they were so addictive? A year ago was on 3mg lunesta, 20mg valium and xanax for sleep. Now down to l0mg of valium and .5 of xanax. No weaning. Don't get it? Strange? The Luvox upped to 75mg which is nothing and no side effects. Actually I feel all these meds pooped out on me years ago as still anxious. I play pretend and ride my bike like the postman at night. Wind, rain, or snow it's my ad and antianxiety med.But this is just me. We are are different. Love Phillipa. Courtney I'm sorry I've forgotten Your reasons for meds the symtoms you would like to leave.

Have you considered any of the Tricyclics?? I have read, several times, that they seem to 'poop out' less often compared to the SSRIs. They may be worth trying if you can put up with the anticholigenic side effects.

> CourtneyHi Courtney,
As one who is tapering off of meds ( I am down from 4 to 1), in my opinion, the key is to taper slowly. The Paxil Progress Boards, run by an RN, recommends that 10% of the current dose be tapered every 3 to 6 weeks.
This may seem very slow but in the long run, it actually works the best as you give your brain time to readjust to not having meds. If you taper too quickly and do what most psychiatrist suggest, it is like putting the brakes on at 60 miles per hour.
Anyway, I have mostly tapered slowly. I did cold turkey Wellbutrin XL without any problems and a few times, tapered my meds too quickly. But my mostly slow tapering schedule has enabled me to persevere in spite of dealing my my mother's death, job issues and insomnia.
I am convinced if I had tapered at the rate my psychiatrist wanted me to, I wouldn't have been successful.
By the way, my psychiatrist thought I would be on meds my whole life. I felt differently, especially after getting a Remeron induced hearing loss.
There are many people like me. Unfortunately, no is beating down our doors to do a study so I can't point you to any links. But we're out there.
Hope this helps and feel free to contact me if you want more information.

ususally when meds work, people stop posting about them and start posting about pizza crusts and sports trades. i wouldn't worry too much that people don't report success
