As one who is tapering off of meds ( I am down from 4 to 1), in my opinion, the key is to taper slowly. The Paxil Progress Boards, run by an RN, recommends that 10% of the current dose be tapered every 3 to 6 weeks.
This may seem very slow but in the long run, it actually works the best as you give your brain time to readjust to not having meds. If you taper too quickly and do what most psychiatrist suggest, it is like putting the brakes on at 60 miles per hour.
Anyway, I have mostly tapered slowly. I did cold turkey Wellbutrin XL without any problems and a few times, tapered my meds too quickly. But my mostly slow tapering schedule has enabled me to persevere in spite of dealing my my mother's death, job issues and insomnia.
I am convinced if I had tapered at the rate my psychiatrist wanted me to, I wouldn't have been successful.
By the way, my psychiatrist thought I would be on meds my whole life. I felt differently, especially after getting a Remeron induced hearing loss.
There are many people like me. Unfortunately, no is beating down our doors to do a study so I can't point you to any links. But we're out there.
Hope this helps and feel free to contact me if you want more information.
