1. Did you ever have high bp problems with parnate? At what dose or doses and did it resolve?
2. Did you have insomnia with parnate? At what dose or doses and if so how did you bring it under control?

Hi Bulldog.
> 1. Did you ever have high bp problems with parnate?
I have had no spontaneous hypertensive issues. I did have one tyramine reaction to pepperoni. It included the classic severe headache with the sensation of pounding at the base of the skull behind the neck.
> 2. Did you have insomnia with parnate?
I never had insomnia with Parnate monotherapy. Nor did I ever respond to monotherapy. It was only when desipramine was added for the very first time did severe insomnia result. I eventually reached full remission on that treatment.
> ...how did you bring it under control?
I used Halcion (triazolam) combined with Ativan (lorazepam). I don't remember the dosages. I don't think there is a drug better than Halcion to knock you out, except, perhaps for the barbiturates. Ativan was added to prevent rebound awakenings and improve sleep maintenance. It worked great. I hadn't been sleeping at all prior. I had total insomnia.

Did you ingest the pepperoni by accident?

> Did you need to go to the hospital for the crisis?
No. I was at work and feared for my job. I found that after a few minutes, I was able to minimize the headache by remaining standing. Soon it disappeared completely while standing, but recurred when seated, so I was pretty sure I was going to be okay. It was a gamble.
> Did you ingest the pepperoni by accident?Yes. I was rushing around work trying to sneak into the lunchroom for a quick piece of pizza. I wasn't thinking. Pizza is okay, but under no circumstances did I ever intend to experiment with pepperoni. After taking three bites of pizza, I looked down, noticed the pepperoni and exclaimed out loud, "What the f_ck am I doing!". The headache began within 30 minutes.
I won't go near true summer dried sausage. Regular sausage seems to be okay with me. I also won't go near salami. Bolagna is okay.

If this is something you would rather not post about, I'll turn on my Babblemail. Otherwise, I'll be right here.

Some literature states that the tyramine content of Brewer's yeast and autolyzed yeast is high. However, there are confusing and contradictory MAOI food lists out there. I don't pay much attention to yeast. I have not had any reaction except for the pepperoni. However, MAOIs are unpredictable. You can eat the same cheese every day for years and not have a reaction, and then one day you react with the classic "cheese reaction". Also, there are interindividual differences in the foods that are tolerated. People have reported eating tons of pepperoni without having a reaction.
I guess I am reluctant to answer your question because of the lack of certainty on my part.
What major products with autolyzed yeast are you referring to? I'll let you know my experiences with them.

I was looking at a soyburger that had that listed. But I guess a soy burger is off limits anyhow.
If you eat out they probably wouldn't be aware of that ingrediant.

I'll add that the only hypertensive crisis I ever had was induced by salami. I'd been on Nardil for years and the symptoms were as Scott described. I "treated" it with a couple ounces of vodka a lay down. <g>
