Is Sonata better than Ambien to initiate sleep?

Posted by SLS on February 11, 2009, at 7:30:58

In the world of benzodiazepines, some hypnotics are more useful to treat initial insomnia (trouble falling asleep) than sleep maintenance insomnia (trouble staying asleep).

I was wondering if Sonata were better than Ambien for initial insomnia. Ambien is probably effective for both types of insomnia, but for tougher cases, perhaps a drug with stronger effects on initial insomnia is warranted.

For MAOI insomnia, a combination of hypnotics is sometimes needed. Has anyone ever combined Sonata with Ambien?

I think ambien is better overall than sonata. I look at it like this. Both medicines are hypnotics but sonata is old school ambien. Pharamceutical companies revamped sonata and called it ambien. Sonata is not better in my opinion.

What if you used to have trouble falling asleep and no longer do but wake like clock work in four hours no matter what med? Seems my insomnia has varied over the past year. So not on Maoi but I guess being overtired or benzos for initial sleep. Phillipa

I'm up to 80mg, hard to believe, huh? My PDoc's choice, I just sit back and do what he tells me. I'm also up to 40mg Ritalin. My current problem is bad insomnia. I remember that though I think with each dose increase. Its been less than a week but a couple of nights never went to sleep. Do you have Parnate related insomnia still?

Also, did it ever feel like your response was totally dose related? in other words, I feel like crap in the morning, but great for the rest of the day after taking my meds.

Hope your great, by the way, you almost let me get my leg chewed off by a shark in social.

An off-asking option which is a benzodiazpine.

Halcion .5mg tablets.

But they only thing, issue with Halcion (trizolam) it works so fast, and gives more sedation than Xanax. But i've read when it wear's off, there's been reports of waking up irrtible and angry (it attaches itself to GABA receptor's high) so it "inciates" a feeling peace, and heavy sleeiness. But it only lasts for 1 hour... so, it will defintelty pleasantly get you to sleep, but when it wears in 1 hour, report's people are angry..psychotic (but some it's propaganda)

Bottem line, it's definently effective, but you would have to also add something to "stay asleep" Prosom (Estazolam) which lasts 6 hours..i believe.

Halcion was on Time magazine in 1991, "Nightsleep or Nightmare" because of the report's from the late 80's people going "rage" after it wears off.

So...you have to know a valid source, not the propaganda for attention.

I took Halcion combined with Ativan for quite awhile when I first tried Parnate and desipramine. The Halcion was absolutely the best drug to help me get to sleep, and the Ativan helped me stay asleep. Restoril worked well in this regard as well. I did not experience a rebound awakening when the Halcion wore off. When I used Halcion alone, I had to keep dosing myself throughout the night.

I posted a re-post, my wireless got cut off. One time i was writing an article online, and it just "cut" off.

But, Halcion is effective, i've never taken it.

Thanks for the response. Actaully this time, feel like a gave good advice (even though Halcion isnt a good recomendation, from the past)

Seroquel at 100-200mg is....it get's be to sleep, but i wake up and have a "resudue" feeling, can't think, it blocks dopamine transporters. Xanax at times to sleep.

Take care

Sonata only helps to induce sleep
It does not help you stay asleep through the night

ambien gave me a good 5 hrs at a time no matter how strange my other meds were

ambien is quicker to put you out

i'm on sonata now just for a change

ambien worked for about 10 years for me
