Zyprexa and Parnate?

Posted by Quintal on September 15, 2008, at 15:26:16

I'm wondering if they'd make a good combo. A psychiatric nurse told me a few years ago that he'd seen a lot of success with Parstelin (Parnate and Stelazine). I'd never sleep on Parnate alone these days, so Zyprexa might be a good add-on to counter agitation and insomnia. Has anyone taken Parnate and Zyprexa together? How about Zyprexa and Wellbutrin? Again, I'm thinking it might counter the agitation and insomnia.

I take zyprexa and wellbutrin sr. Never taken the other 2 you mentioned.

Great mix for insomnia and agitation. Particulary the zyprexa if you had to pick one.

Thank you Zyprexa. Does the Wellbutrin offset any of the sedation?

I wonder if clonidine would be better. I cannot find anything indicating it would negativly interact with maoi. It might potentate antidepressant effect.
I think olanzapine would work, but it has side effects.

Yes, that's what I was hoping for. I took a little bit (1.25mg) a few days ago and it helped straight away. It felt good not to be hypervigilant and paranoid and angry all the time - so good that I'm finding it hard to stop taking it! I think Zyprexa is habit forming for me. I was hoping that Wellbutrin or Parnate might offset some of the sedation and suppress the appetite. I have bipolar disorder and some lingering psychotic symptoms, so I think it's something my pdoc might actually be enthusiastic about. They love prescribing Zyprexa, and though I hate to say it, it does feel pretty good. Even better than lorazepam. The cognitive side effects and weight gain bother me most, though I have a feeling my 'social intelligence' improves slightly when I'm not suspicious and angry at other people.

Oh, olanzapine can help with depression. I was refering to clonidine (not clozpine). As far as antipsychotics, if you are concerned with weight, why not risperdone? If it doesn't increase your prolactin level, it can be low-side effect. It is not as frequently sedating, although i found it to be so. I found it to slightly help clear thinking.

I've avoided risperidone so far because of the relatively high incidence of akathisia and anxiety. I responded badly to other APs that cause these side effects. Amisulpride is the only other antipsychotic that I could tolerate, and it too raises prolactin but didn't cause the usual side effects assciated with elevated prolactin for me. I don't know about risperidone. The people I've known personally who have taken it appeared very agitated and irritable, had to keep moving all the time. My friend had to quit it earlier this year because it was causing insomnia. My impression is that it causes as side effects the symptoms I most want to treat. I think clonidine might work, but it could aggravate any orthostatic hypotension that Parnate might cause.
