I don't know if this is the right place to enquire. I have Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, which is not a psychiatric disorder, but the poor sleep due to PLMD exacerbates depression and ADD, for which I take Effexor XR, and Concerta respectively. For the PLMD I have been taking Mirapex, but I currently experiencing an effect called augmentation, whereby the effects come on earlier in the evening, and the current dose is not as effective. I have been reading that both Valium and Klonopin are sometimes used to treat PLMD, because of the anti-convulsant properties of these drugs. Does anyone here have any experience with this? I still am not getting restful sleep, and I am planning to speak with my physician at my next appointment about modifying my treatment. Thanks!

I have Restless Leg Syndrom, which started out when I was taking SSRI's in high dosage and got clonic seizures. I don't know if either or both of those are related to your problem, but it sounds like it. That is, it sounds like a more severe cousin to RLS.
Mirapex does me fine for the RLS, and so does Klonopin. I don't use Klonopin for it, due to the habituation problem.
Anyway, I do have one useful suggestion, which is to ask your doctor about Requip. It knocks out my RLS completely and there are a lot of free two-week sample packs floating around. For me, no side effects whatsoever, but I only take it occasionally as-needed.
Oh, yeah, one other thing. I actually think it was Effexor that started and/or aggravated my problem. It had my arms flapping around like flippers on a beached fish. You might want to check that out. Seizure is a listed side effect.

Pretty much on every site except Wyeth's (LOL)
I just Googled and this was my first hit:
http://www.drugs.com/effexor.htmlAt any rate, it really hit me hard. I had a lot of clonic movement (like, my arm would just flap back and forth like a clock pendulum) and a couple of outright convulsions in the big muscles of my back. Scared the hell out of both myself and my wife.
( Am I the only one who finds this at all funny: "Notify your doctor immediately if you have . . . seizures". Nah, honey, let's wait a few hours and see if you stop thrashing around.)

Both work very for well PLMD and RLS but clonazepam has worked that little bit better than valium for me. Mind you, I mean just a little. They are both good options. Valium isn't as heavy though. Dopamine Agonists such as mirapex and requip make me sick so I stopped before augmentation became a problem like so many people report. I'd try valium first and if that doesn't work then give klonopin a go.
