akathisia from seroquel

Posted by therock on March 2, 2008, at 21:46:35

hello,

i am wondering how long it can take to get symptoms of akathisia? i have a hard time trusting my own experience because i react so strangely to these medications. today, i took 25mg of seroquel and was pacing around my apartment for several hours.

can a one time dose of 25 mg cause akathisia? does it typically go away once you stop the medication? thanks.

Yes, it can cause akathisia at that dose but I really got bad on 50 mg. I went off and it got better really quick. Seroquel was a disaster for me. I have never felt so out of control in my life I could not stop tapping my foot. Sitting still was impossible.

That's an incredibly rare reaction to a non-therapeutic dose, but everyone is different. So in both of your cases, apparently yes.

And yes, it goes away. And yes if you wanted to continue treatment with what is considered to be among the safest APs you would need to take anticholinergics or possibly propranolol.

Maybe Zyprexa for you would be a better choice.

Or Geodon or Abilify both of which gave me skin crawling akathisia.

Akathisia is a temporary phenomenon (yes, we can get into the unfortunate and rare cases of Tardive Akathisia with atypicals, I have an immensly rare case of Tardive Dystonia from Zyprexa) and just like pseudoparkinsonism will go away when you stop the medication. 25mg one time will be gone way before you receive this.

I hope you receive some better relief from another medication of doctor-patient choice.
