I know this depends on the type of person that you are, but can Ambien(Zolpidem) be better for anxiety rather than a benzo? I have taken Ambien in the past and it really helps to calm me down considering the half-life is only 2-2.5 hours long.
thanks : )

According to the information that I found out through wikipedia, it is said that Zolpidem and Alpidem are in the class of Imidazopyridine category. I don't know if lunesta is in the same class.
I did find out that lunesta belongs to the class of cyclopyrrones. Both drugs (Ambien and Lunesta) are considered to be sedative hypnotics.
I believe that Ambien is more of a hypnotic and lunesta is more of a sedative. Also, this depends on the person and how they will react to the medication.
I have taken lunesta in the past but it broke me out in a rash (rare side effect). I guess that ambien is the KING when it comes to being similar to a benzodiazepine.
P.S. If I want to learn more about medications is it a good idea to take chemistry classes. Say, Organic Chem I and II or Physical Chemistry.
You were a nurse at one time during your career correct?
Thanks : )

Twinch from what I recall I think all of them are in the same class.
Eszopiclone (Lunesta)
Ramelteon (Rozerem)
Zaleplon (Sonata)
Zolpidem (Ambien)
Zolpidem extended-release (Ambien CR)

Twinch sorry haven't been home but lunesta and ambien are basically the same. They say ambien does cause amnesia though. I took lunesta and it was fine and no withdrawal going off it but they are both classified like a benzo. Now why do they say they are non addictive and still classify them in about the same way. Thanks rina for the above. Phillipa

Ambien (zolpidem) is a dirty med. It can aggravate depression and it should not necessarily retain its efficacy after continued use. I used to take it as an alternate to Xanax, but I know both are not the same at any rate.Zolpidem doesn't cause withdrawal seizures. This is the only advantage it has over benzos. But it is a dangerous medication as it can cause total amnesia and somnabulism in certain individuals.
Not to scare you. YMMV

The both of you are absolutely correct concerning the effects of the drug. It caused both amnesia and sleep walking for me while taking the ambiencr, that's why I switched to trazadone for sleep aid. I was just responding to the class of meds but yes your right in regards to the effects of ambien.

Ambien was horrible for me. Not only did it not put me to sleep (and made what little sleep I got really horrible), but the next day I was very agitated, had body shakes, hot and cold flashes, super sensitivity to caffeine, and found it hard to sleep at all the following night. Seemed to have the paradoxical opposite reaction to what it's supposed to do. I take Xanax, and I find that I can take a little extra Xanax and it helps me to sleep. I haven't tried any of the other sedative/hypnotics.

lunesta with valium the lunesta at 3mg was okay. I have no taste so that isn't a problem for me. But dropped it due to cost. Phillipa
