I've been severely depressed for 3 months ... refused to be put on meds, but instead spent $2000 on therapies ... nothing's working. AHHHHHHH so I'm planning to do the following:
1. SJW (AMORYN):2 pills morning & evening, each containing
18mg Hyperforin (=36mg total)
25mg 5 HTP (=50mg total)
90mg Rhodioia Rosea Extract (= 180mg total)2. SAM E: 400 mg morning & 400 mg evening
3. ADRAFINIL: 300 mg morning & 300 mg evening
4. DEPRENYL: 1mg morning
PLUS Multi B-vitamins in the morning ...
Suppose for the morning pills, I take them w/o breakfast (at least for the sake of better SAM E absorption). Here are my concerns:
1. Danger of digestive/liver function failure?
(Adarafinil is known to cause liver stress during long-term use, but I was hoping that SamE may correct that problem)2. Danger of serotonin syndrome?
3. Danger of Hypertensive problem?
(Deprenyl can act like MAO ... and Adarafinil ... I don't know. Although it's been said that Adarafinil doesn't act the same way as amphetamin, I'm just a little worried)I know I'm supposed to ask a proper psychiatrist about this, but I'm now really broke and don't know what I'm supposed to do. Thank you!

In reply to SJW + SAM E + ADRAFINIL + DEPRENYL ... TOO MUCH?, posted by Larc on August 17, 2007, at 0:39:02
... No motivation to go out, but can't stand being alone. Extreme loniness ... I start calling myself parasite and beggar ... but I'm so afraid of meeting new people.
... afraid of trying out new things, constantly giving excuses for not trying/quitting ... can't stand it anymore.
I was totally opposite a few months ago. Motivated, working hard, rather enjoyed being alone, and thought I knew how to take care of myself.
Now ... I don't even know what "happiness" is supposed to feel like ... or "joy"
=> How are the meds supposed to be working anyhow? Will they at least make me motivated to do something (instead of saying "don't feel like doing anything"), make me feel energized, and want to go out without any feeling of something holding me back?
Are these unrealistic expectations to begin with?

Larc,
You are probably suffering your first major depressive episode. The bad news is that it really sucks. I'd rather be hit in the face with a 2 x 4. The good news is, inspite of your preference, depression medications can help.
I too didn't respond to any therapy, etc. It kept me too distracted from everyday life. Thinking about baby steps is great, but it doesn't pay the mortgage. Not to knock therapy, it just didn't help me.
Your aversion to being a pill popper is understandable. But, ask yourself, would I take a drink of water if I was thirsty? Would that make you a "water popper"? In the end, your body needs something and you comply. If you had a bad experience with anti-depressants in the past, I encourage you to read the posting of people who tried 6 different types, over a period of years until they found something that works.
Don't give up hope.

I'd personalyl take one thing at a time to see if you how you react. Going too fast with particular treatemnts or combos can somtimes just create bad experiences.
The amoryn might be a good start, but I'd personally just start with a high quality SJW product. Sometimes people react poorly to combo products but better to sole agents.
SAMe can definately be stimulating, and you might push yourself into dypshoria when combining it with the others.
SAMe + deprenyl can sometimes be very stimulating, adding on SJW might and rhodioia might be too much.
You have a number of agents here that manipulate dopamine metabolsm in a number of different ways.
You might just get a nervous energy. If your depression is is more anxious depression, you may want to start with either SJW or 5-htp.
If your depression is more low energy or interest, you may want to start with deprenyl or SAMe.
