Larc,
You are probably suffering your first major depressive episode. The bad news is that it really sucks. I'd rather be hit in the face with a 2 x 4. The good news is, inspite of your preference, depression medications can help.
I too didn't respond to any therapy, etc. It kept me too distracted from everyday life. Thinking about baby steps is great, but it doesn't pay the mortgage. Not to knock therapy, it just didn't help me.
Your aversion to being a pill popper is understandable. But, ask yourself, would I take a drink of water if I was thirsty? Would that make you a "water popper"? In the end, your body needs something and you comply. If you had a bad experience with anti-depressants in the past, I encourage you to read the posting of people who tried 6 different types, over a period of years until they found something that works.
Don't give up hope.
