As the saying goes... mileage will vary. Some people never gain weight from SSRIs... I put on 60 fattening pounds. Ativan tends to have a paridoxal effect on me, while valium works wonders... I have anxiety issues, and I took adderall for 3 years at 20 MGs a day without any problems... You just can never tell... Everyone is very different.

So true there used to be a girl from the UK who couldn't take valium without a paradoxical effect. I remember her. Love Phillipa

Do docs still prescribe good, old fashioned, "Mother's Little Helper" Valium? When we were running through the benzos available to help me with GAD/Panic, my pdoc never mentioned Valium. Basically he recommended daily Klonopin, along with Ativan or Xanax for acute anxiety attacks as needed. I tried Ativan -- his preference, as Xanax is highly addictive -- but it didn't agree with my stomach so he's okay with the as-needed Xanax "backup" to my daily Klonopin.But I digress. Does anyone know where Valium fits into the benzo menu? In particular, how does it compare and contrast with Klonopin for long-lasting leveling of GAD symptoms?

Xanax is really no more "addictive" than other benzos you mentioned, valium ativan, klonopin, etc. They are all benzos just with different half-lives. Xanax has a short half-life thus people mistakenly believe it is more "addictive". It is fast acting, and also has some antidepressant properties.
Valium is still prescribed here in the US but not as often as the newer benzos such as klonopin, ativan or xanax. It is one of the longest in terms of half life (has active metabolites) that stay in your system for a long time. There is a benzo half life chart somewhere here on Dr. Bob's site. Valium tends to be more of a muscle relaxant than say xanax.

Xanax is a great med and it's not additive in all people. You can switch benzos but if you quit you must slowly wean off them. Love Phillipa
