Xanax is really no more "addictive" than other benzos you mentioned, valium ativan, klonopin, etc. They are all benzos just with different half-lives. Xanax has a short half-life thus people mistakenly believe it is more "addictive". It is fast acting, and also has some antidepressant properties.
Valium is still prescribed here in the US but not as often as the newer benzos such as klonopin, ativan or xanax. It is one of the longest in terms of half life (has active metabolites) that stay in your system for a long time. There is a benzo half life chart somewhere here on Dr. Bob's site. Valium tends to be more of a muscle relaxant than say xanax.

Basically he recommended daily Klonopin, along with Ativan or Xanax for acute anxiety attacks as needed. I tried Ativan -- his preference, as Xanax is highly addictive -- but it didn't agree with my stomach so he's okay with the as-needed Xanax "backup" to my daily Klonopin.
