Hi Folks
I've been taking Diazepam (Valium) and an SRRI (Fluvoxamine) for debilitating Social Anxiety / panic attacks for about 10 years but my tolerance to Diazepam has increased so much that I am wondering about Nardil.
I understand about the insomnia/weight gain/diet restrictions but have heard that Nardil is incredibly effective otherwise. I need something that has the calming effect of Diazepam together with treating the reactive depression that the Fluvoxamine treats.
Psychological therapy has helped up to a point but not enough.
One of my worries is that I understand the "recipe" for Nardil changed a few years back, so I am not sure if it is still as effective as it people have said it used to be.
I would be so grateful if anyone can offer advice / feedback of any kind?
Many thanks
Guy

Hi
I expect that Nardil could potentially be very effective for you but finding a psychiatrist to prescribe it may be difficult.
First, you would have to slowly taper off fluvoxamine (Faverin, Luvox) because there is a very serious interaction between these two medications. You have to have been completely off fluvoxamine for at least a week before starting Nardil.

The UK Nardil is made by a different company to the US Nardil. I've never heard of any problems with the UK Nardil. As ever, Nardil can be very effective for certain people, but it's a difficult drug to use compared with most.

Hi Guy
I am also in the UK, and have managed to get both Phenelzine amd Tranylcypromine from my GP, but that is rare. However, once on them and then when I seen a psychiatrst they were happy for me to keep taking them. In saying it is rare a friend was given lithium but her GP the other day, and she has never seen a psychiatrist, so you could get luck.
One thing to be careful of is as you know the diet and drug interactions, I would particularly careful if you do ever get (and I hope you dont) a hypertensive reaction. This is because it happened to me and the local Casualty Dept. tried to inject me with tramadol during one. You need to know that pethidine and tramadol, are contraindicated analgesics (I also think tramadol may have replaced Nubain used by paramedics).
Good luck.

Hi Ed
I know. What concerns me is have they replaced it with tramadol. If so, if you are in an accident screaming in pain are you going to bother telling the paramedic I have epilepsy, or take an SSRI, or MAOI, which can lead to sezuires, serotonin syndrome, and with the latter serotonin syndome and a hypertensive crisis. It interacts with too many things to be used routinely by paramedics in my opinion, they should be given morphine. I appreciated this may lead to more people trying to rob them, but that shouid not stop people getting the correct treatment.

I should add serotonin syndrome caused by a mixture of tramdol and an SSRI might be relatively rare. The problem is, is a doctor in the Casualty Department going to spot it in time and give the dantrolene, or cyproheptadine.
