I don't know if it's the Effexor, but ever since I started taking it, I've felt like getting out more and doing things on the weekends that I usually don't do.
For some reason, I'm suddenly brave enough to go to all the clubs and bars that none of my friends would ever go with me to. They all like going to the movie theater or bowling alley on Saturday night, but suddenly I realize how boring that is and really want to go places where I can get a drink and listen to a band play.
Since none of my boring friends will go with me, is it bad or weird that I'm doing these sort of things alone?
Also, does Effexor usually make people more outgoing or sociable?

2 weeks so far. I know this is probably a good thing, but a lot of the people I know act like it's weird that my personality has suddenly changed. In the past, even when I wasn't depressed, I was always sort of conservative and shy. I guess I should just try to enjoy it while it lasts.

Hopefully, it will last forever, but whether it does or doesn't, you definitely should enjoy it now. And build on it, if possible. Use your new, more outgoing personality to enlarge your circle of friends so you continue to have people in your life who enjoy what you enjoy. It sounds like you previously suffered from social phobia without even recognizing it. You may be one of those people who thrive on mixing and being out amongst people but whose generally reticent personality has blocked them from realizing what their preferences actually are. Now that you do know, go for it.

Yes, it's the Effexor. I had about two weeks where I felt GREAT! I was social and smiling a lot, getting my work done. But that passed. Hopefully it maintains for you. I got pretty sick from it after a few weeks.

Its Effexor.I have been on it since begining of 2005 and was clearly more sociable and started living outside myself.Sometimes when I need a boost I use with it Bromazepam(Lexotanil) or Tramadol ,but not all the time since after a long use they counteract Effexor's effects.

Thanks for the comments. I was just afraid I was becomeing manic or something, sice it's so weird for me to be suddenly getting out so much. But now I realize that this is what normal nondepressed people do.
I can't say I ever had social phobia, but I've always been conservative and felt like I don't know what to do with myself around other people.
I even thought taking benzos would help, but apperantly not. My doctor initially prescribed the Effexor for Valium induced depression. I feel like it's changed my life for the better, with no real side effects, so I definitely want to stay on it.

Hi Cynthia,
Yes, enjoy this new you for as long as you can. When my daughter was on Dilaudid for a jaw surgery and she was having funky, funny dreams every night because of the narcotic, I told her to enjoy them while she had the chance. Lol.
You may never have had a bad case of social phobia, but something has been holding you back for some time. I have severe social phobia, and now I'm on Effecor XR 300 mg for a few months (with 2 other meds). It DOES make a difference. I'm not AS nervous to show myself in public in the daylight!! Heaven forbid!! I like to not be noticed (I don't know why), but I LOVE people!! So even though my social phobia is probably only a tad better than it was before the Effexor XR, I feel better about myself and I think it will just be a process of taking little bits of control over more and more of my life....and I think the Effexor XR will play a big part in that. As well, I sometimes can get very social on these forums and groups that I belong to on the internet....and then I go dead quiet for some time. But again, I think that is the Effexor XR helping me to peck a little crack in my shell. It doesn't happen overnight.
So enjoy what you are going through now. It might fade in and out, and while you're "in" the outgoing state, you should really try to acclimate yourself to it so it's a bit easier to get back to that state again. Good luck!!!!
God bless,
Sandy

Hi SandyWeb. I just wanted to say that you sound MUCH better than you have before. Your love of people is obvious, but that Effexor is allowing you to put your face outside your front door is just fantastic! I'm so glad it's working for you.

>Yes, I had a bout of being a deputy and changed my name after I handed in my badge. (shakes head) Now I can feel any old way and not feel obliged to live up to my posting name :-)
