Hey all. I'm a 20 year old male diagnosed with Borderline personality disorder.
I gave up on all my medication about a month ago and am starting fresh. For the sake of wanting to see which medication people suggest i will not mention previous medications YET.All advice is welcome on this topic, preferably some professional advice.
My current situation is this:
*mild mood instability - cycling regularly between childishness, exhaustion, anxiety and depression(not as bad as its sounds, its actually manageable these days with the help of CA therapy).
*moderate atypical depression - over eating/weight gain, lack of motivation/interest/energy, apathy, feelings and thoughts of guilt(past suicide attempts and self harm).
*generalized yet mainly social anxiety - worrying about anything and everything, especially being judged by others, avoidance of social situations, (nervous feelings through entire body when forced into social circumstances).
My main question i put to readers of this post is what u think the most appropriate medications are for the above, preferably trying to hit more than 1 bird with 1 stone at a time.
All posts would be much appreciated, oh and im not about to run down to my local doctor and get scripts for the medication people recommend, im here only for advice to assist my research into meds that i can approach my new psychiatrist about.
Thanx guys, i will be posting daily.

> Thanx guys, i will be posting daily.I stronly recommend you go to www.pubmed.gov to assist you with your research. Put in a search for Akiskal. This would be Dr. Hagop S. Akiskal. He is a pioneer in the study of mood disorders, resistant depression, BPD, just to name a few. I have learned so much valuble information from his books and publications.
You ask for professonal advice. I am a psychiatric nurse from Pa. I have what you would call "soft bipolar". You will learn in your research that there is a broad spectrum to mood disorders. Atypical depression, BPD, social anxiety you describe above can all fit in the bipolar spectrum. AD and a mood stabilizer is very common. Other sites for research are Dr. Ivans Depression Central and psycheducation.org
Hope this helps.

like the other poster said, "borderline" may often be a form of bipolar w/ marked interpersonal problems. I would personally think some sort of low-dose mood stabilizer would be a first course, plus some sort of therapy (group, individual, counselling, self-help..something) to help you out.
Personally, if I were you, I'd try to emphasize the non-medical treatment aspects...its a tougher road, but for personality disorders and some mood/anxiety disorders, the pay offs can be longer-lasting and more profound.
Some boredlines take neuroleptics. I personally think that's overkill, but I imagine a low-dose neuroleptic as-needed (if you need it) might be an option.Good luck!
This is the end of the thread.
