In 1990 I developed terrible problems with swallowing, throwing up and dry-retching. There was nothing wrong with me physically. In 1992 I was put on Nardil. After 6 weeks the drug 'kicked-in' and all my symptoms disappeared. Nardil was a real lifesaver.
11 years later I am still on Nardil. I take 4x15mg tablets each morning.
I have twice tried to change to SSRIs with no success.
Despite the warning about dietary restrictions I find that I have no problems whatsoever. However, I do suffer from two serious side-effects. The first has ben weight gain. The second is insomnia. For this I take 2x1mg Lortemazepam and 10mg Neulactil (a pericyazine)one hour before I go to bed. My sleep is great. However, the Lortemazepam on its own wil only knock me out for about an hour. For extended deep REM sleep the Neulactil is absolutely vital.
I would be very interested to hear from both other Nardil users and from any people with symptoms such as my own.

PS1 I lived in Australia for 9 years and am considering returning. Does anyone have any details about the curent situation with Nardil availability? It was taken off the market, but I've heard talk that it will soon be re-available.
PP2 My psychiatrist is currently suggesting that I go on Lithium in addition to the Nardil. Does anyone have any experience of this?
PS3 A psychiatrist once tried to change me onto SSRIs immediateley (Citalopram). I fell unconcious and was in a coma for 4 hours. Take drug interactions with Nardil very seriously!

HI Willow,
How much weight have you gained over the years?
Were you able to lose some of it after your body adjusted? Thank you.

This means it costs more . You have to go to a docter, tell 'em your NOT willing to change from Nardil, and get them to wright a letter to The Special Access Scheme for approval. You'll get approved.
You will get your Nardil through Link medical products. They are very good people to me. If it's so ridicuously pricy get then to send it to your doc! I personally only pay $8 Australia (which equals $16 US) for a box of 100.So, no need to worry. Nardil will be there for you.

After 14 years on Nardil, I'm trying to come off it. I usually take 4x15mg tablets each morning. I have progressively reduced this each week to 3x15mg then 2x15mg etc. Now that I am on 1x15mg tablets my symptoms of problems swallowing are re-appearing.
The aim is that after I have finished Nardil completely there will be a two week 'wash out' period. The intention then is that I try an SNRI called Venlafxine.
I will send a further posting in New Year 2007 letting you know how I am coping with the new medication.

Why are you stopping the Nardil? Venlaxfine (isn't that Effexor) may not work as well for you and sometimes people who stop a drug to try another, finding it doesn't work for them, then want to go back to the original med and find it doesn't work the second time. Why risk that?
I took Nardil as it was one of the only meds that I would say worked well for my atypical depression. None of the Serotonin drugs worked as well for me.
I may retry Nardil as my next backup med to Emsam which I am currently on.
Good luck with whatever you do?

Hi StarGazer
Why am I coming off Nardil you ask?
I have been on Nardil (MAOI) for 14 years now during which time my weight has increased from 9.5 stone to 20 stone. I also suffer badly from insomnia - which is why I have to take both Lortemazepam and Neulactil (pericyazine).
So in order to try to stop the weight gain and insomnia I am currently coming off Nardil. My problems with dry-retching and vomiting have reappeared.
I take Nardil because of its so called 'anxiolytic' effect i.e. it relieves anxiety. Venlafaxine (Exffefor)also is meant to have an anxiolytic effect without the extreme side effects of Nardil.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Could you clarrify what you mean by 'atypical depression'? Does Nardil help this?

Hi,
I guess when I first read your post you didn't mention that you were coming off Nardil. I thought that despite the two side effects you were just trying to adjust the other meds to counteract the problems. So 20 stone is how much weight in pounds?
Too bad you had to switch after such a long run. So many of us on this site have TRD (treatment resistant depression) which means many drug failures and inability to have good (or minimal)success with controlling depressive symptoms.
I have attached a link to an atypical depression
site. It actually says it is the most common form of depression which I did not know.
After reading it I thought maybe I don't have this afterall but I attached for you to read. So much misinformation over the years I'm not sure what I have anymore, depression, ADD, social anxiety, bipolar...It doesn't really matter what the diagnosis is anyway, now it's all about the symptoms.
Good luck with Effexor...SG
This is the end of the thread.
