Does anyone have any Imipramine experiences?

Posted by UgottaHaveHope on December 6, 2006, at 22:35:41

I never hear it talked about on here. I have been diagnosed with anxiety first, then depression. I am currently taking 200mg Seroquel and 3mg Klonopin. My mind races and races, which makes me retreat. Someone suggested Nardil or Imipramine, but they said Imipramine had far less diet restrictions. Anyone with any experiences?

The most noticeable side effect of Imipramine is the dry mouth. Be prepared for you mouth to get very very dry (and no amount of drinking water seems to make it better. I was on it several years ago and it brought me out of a deep depression. It was almost like magic.

That was until I suffered an even worse crisis and in a moment of panic I OD'd and took 40-50 50 mg tabs. The only reason that I'm still alive is that the paramedics got to me just in time (my doc said that if they had arrived just 30 minutes later than they did, I wouldn't be here).

The trycyclics are one of the oldest AD's around and they're also one of the cheapest. But of course, nothing is worth your life, so if you have any suicidal compulsions whatsoever, I'd proceed with extreme caution (your doc will - or should - tell you that).

Good luck!

Imipramine (Tofranil) made me pretty stupid. Plus, it can cause weight gain. When I took it, I was taking a stimulant, so the weight gain wasn't too bad, but the stupidity was still pretty bad. I don't know your situation, but I don't think adding something as sedating as Tofranil to 2 sedating meds would be the best idea...plus, the Tofranil could make weight gain from the seroquel more intense.

Maybe you could try upping the klonopin, or adding in something faster-acting (xanax, ativan) for breakthrough anxiety. If you're bipolar, a mood stabilizer might help (ex: lamictal or trileptal). BuSpar might be useful. A newer antidepressant (effexor, cymbalta) could have similar re-uptake properties as Tofranil, but with fewer noxious side effects. You could also up the seroquel.

Good luck.

Med_Empowered described pretty well what can happen at higher dosages of imipramine. It can produce some cognitive side effects, presumably due to the drug's anticholinergic properties. I did not find it at all sedating, however. At lower dosages, up to 150mg, I didn't find cognitive side effects an issue. Imipramine was considered to be the "gold standard" to which all other antidepressants were compared. Now that the efficacy of SSRIs and Effexor have been established, you don't see imipramine used as a comparator drug very much anymore.

If you wish to try a tricyclic antidepressant, you might want to consider trying desipramine (imipramine derivative) or nortriptyline (amitriptyline derivative) instead. They have much reduced side effects.

Nardil is a great drug. Do not avoid it forever.

I've tried desipramine and nortriptyline, which are similar to imipramine except milder. Both of them kind of felt good even on the first day.

The problem I had was severe hypotension. I mean really severe. I was so dizzy I could hardly walk. My heart was just beating like crazy and my blood pressure dropped so low. I didn't mind the dry mouth or the constipation. Overall they felt way too powerful and unhealthy to me in terms of cardio-pulmonary function. And that was just on tiny doses. I am very sensitive.

It made my heart feel like it was going to lurch out of my chest.
