EMSAM and serotonin

Posted by Kristopher on May 2, 2006, at 21:29:29

Does anyone know if EMSAM affects serotonin at the 6mg dosage? I can't seem to find any information about this. I know it's an MAO-B medicine, and MAO-A is what affects serotonin. Would a higher dosage of EMSAM be more affective?

thanks

Kris

The PDR info lists EMSAM as inhibiting both MAO A and B, at all dosages, although with a greater affinity for MAO B. These are enzymes on the outer membranes of cellular mitochondria. Inhibiting them allows for greater activity of all three neurotransmitter monoamines: nor-epinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. I think that serotonin is relatively less influenced than the other two monoamines, but all are influenced. I don't know, but I wonder if this is why the oral MAOI's tend to remain effective and helpful for some people for many years- the neurotransmitters' activity is enhanced, but they remain in greater balance with one another.

The way they have this labeled or whatever is what is misleading and confusing. It is acutally a 20mg dose when they say 6mg (why why why, someont tell me I don't understand that) so since it is 20 mg it is non selective and does deanimate MAO A allowing more seratonin in the system. This is why I worry about taking the 5 HTP your doc suggested. I have not heard back from anyone saying that it makes them as apprehensive as it does me but I don't trust any pdocs, any docs for that matter, I have to do my own research before I will listen to what they say is ok.

I'm doing great on EMSAM. A day or so ago it really seemed to kick in. I'm not taking the 5-htp. I decided against that. Thank you Donna Louise!

I'll post soon, but so far so good. The anxiety is much less this week, and I think the serotonin effect of the selegiline took effect -- finally!

Glad to hear it's starting to work for you. It's changed my life for sure. I'm 28 days on it now and if you're like me it will continue to improve. I was begining to doubt that and anti depressant would work for me. Best of luck! Rob

Could the serotonin lead to weight gain, like SSRI'sm Buspar, and Effexor have with me? I even gained with the weak reuptake of serotonin in Wellbutrin!
