The PDR info lists EMSAM as inhibiting both MAO A and B, at all dosages, although with a greater affinity for MAO B. These are enzymes on the outer membranes of cellular mitochondria. Inhibiting them allows for greater activity of all three neurotransmitter monoamines: nor-epinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. I think that serotonin is relatively less influenced than the other two monoamines, but all are influenced. I don't know, but I wonder if this is why the oral MAOI's tend to remain effective and helpful for some people for many years- the neurotransmitters' activity is enhanced, but they remain in greater balance with one another.
