Hello,
I've been a poster for awhile... and I'm currently on seroquel and lithium but its not enought to control the cycling from depression into an agitated anxious state.... I've tried trileptal and tegretol and both send me into a very nice hypomanic state for a week and then stop working... its so frustrating.. anyone have any ideas???

I think it is important to prevent the hypomania so as to break the cycle. You can try Lamictal in combination with lithium. Lamictal is thought to help treat rapid cyclicity. My other thought is to use Zyprexa as an antimanic. Both of these drugs also offer antidepressant properties. In fact, they are both known to have produced mania on rare occasions. Of the atypical APs, I believe Zyprexa has the best chance of working. If it does work, and you are unhappy with side effects, then you can try substituting for it by using Seroquel or Abilify in its place.

thanx for the message... Lamictal sends into cycling very quickly.. I've tried Zyprexa and its caused severe sedation.. i'm now on a healthy dose of seroquel, 600mg, so i feel that ive got the atypical angle covered... I'm on 1200mg of lithium as well... its just so strange how i almost feel like mood stabilizers/anticonculsants send me into a strange euphoric state before pooping out on me...

When you say they stop working after a week, I understand that means the nice hypomania is gone, but does that mean that cycling resumes? Or are things stable?
I know you mentioned that you have the atypical thing covered with seroquel, but actually that might not be completely true. They are different enough from one another to be significant. Ziprasidone or abilify maybe. Zyprexa sedation is intense at first, kind of like seroquel is at first, but it fades.
The other thing is depakote extended release. Depakote seems to work best in combination with another mood stabilizer or an atypical AP. I found side effects to be minimal, with some weight gain and some cognitive slowing. It can stop cycling in 1 to 3 days.
Other than that, it might be worth checking thyroid function, if you haven't already...everything includinng TSH, T3free, T4free, reverse T3, and the two antibodies. The antibodies thing is important, because if there is an autoimmune thing going on wreaking havoc, it won't show up on the other tests. No mood stabilizer in the world could compete with a hidden thyroid condition.

Hi,
I'm wondering if seroquel 600mg could be causing this very short mood brightening effects of mood stabilizers trileptal and tegretol???
