I take 300 mgs. of Trazodone at night for Parnate induced insomnia.I know it's a high dose anything less than this does not work for meand my pdoc told me to try it. I also take 50 mgs. of Benadryl. The Benadryl helps me fall asleep, while the Trazodone keeps me asleep. This combo is working beautifully for my insomnia..I sleep great.
Here's the problem. I wake up feeling extremely groggy, and worse of all I'm freakin' drowsy all day long! It's ruining my great response with Parnate..I'm not depressed or anxious, just so damn sedated. My pdoc is excellent, I have an appointment this Friday afternoon, however, He doesn't like non-benzo hypnotics i.e., ambien, lunesta, etc. says they can exasperate depression problems. He doesn't know I'm taking the benadryl. I take it for allergies...only at night, and I simply cannot fall asleep without it.
Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well first off many people used benadryl for insomnia alone,in fact i know actualy PERSONALY meaning real life people who use benadryl as a permanent sleep aid.
Just remeber bendaryl is the same EXACT active chemical in almost ALL your over the counter sleep aids, unisom, tyenol pm etc.My bro swears by it and hasent built any tolerance,he has his unisom nightly and sleeps fine.
I personaly dont like them, but i have heard many times of it being used as the main sleep aid with MAOIS so if that works for you, benadryl, theres a good chance u can just cut the trazadone and try that.
As for sleep, nothing is a good idea to use for sleep every night, unfortunatly some people feel,or actualy do HAVE to,but the idea of forced sleep alone is generaly not good.
These new sleep agents,lunesta.....ambien cr.......rezarem are all being brought out with the intention of long term use, unlike ur orginal ambien or benzo being used and not being recomended for long at all, these instead are with docs supervision supposed to be used somewhat long term.
I personaly HATE trazadone, why he feels its any better i dont know, its an anti depressant with accumative effects, meaning its gonna impact your parnate response more than one of the mentioned sleep aids,in theory anyway cause trazadone although taken at night is still a ANTI DEPRESSANT and in theory again is supposed to accumalte and produce anti depressant effects,i personaly dont see it being any better for u than lunesta or even more so rezarem.
Regardless your not dealing with insomnia, parnate is notorious to be a drug that inhibits night time sleep, perhaps its the metabolites becomming active at that time, which are supposed to be amphetmaine like, but i know upon taking parnate im likly to sleep where as its def a night time pain, ambien simply works for me,im ot till the 14th cause someone stole some meds from me in ny out of my bag,but i was even using partial tabs ambien works great when u dont take it right when u lay down but instead close to bed time, and forget about it,what i noticed was when i went to bed,i fell asleep.
I wouldent touch trazadone, its an ugly dirty old drug yuck ask ur doc why hes aganist say lunesta over trazadone when lunesta is allegedy ok for some what long term use.

And I agree, traz is a very old and dirty drug. Benadryl (for many) gives them that day after, groggy feeling. For me traz doesn't do that so maybe it is the benadryl? I have been taking ambien CR now and it seems to work except that I wake up in the middle of the night, control released or not! Lunesta is about the same as ambien. Seroquel is a great sleeping pill if you don't mind dragging your *ss the whole next day in a daze. Back down on the traz and try the Unisom . Maybe all you need is a change.

Tyler,
I took trazadone for over 2 years. I had to keep upping the dosage, with increasing side effects.
I've done better since switching to Lunesta. Although it's not perfect. Your doctor needs to read the current research on sleep drugs.

Thanks Jake. My brother swears by Lunesta. Also, I agree with you about my Doc..He's a very smart guy, I really don't understand his position when it comes to non-benzo hypnotics...doesn't make sense.Tyler

Its curious that you can tolerate Trazodone with Parnate because it is considered a major drug interaction -- perhaps the level you are on doesnt produce this as much. 600mg I think is considered an full adult dose. Benadryl is a medium drug interaction too. Lunesta doesn't appear to have any interactions with tranylcypromine, so I wonder about this prescribing -- but as usual, check with your doctor. (Drugs.com has an interaction checker -- other sites do too)

Lots of things are "technicaly" an interaction with parnate, not to down play anyone who ever did have a reaction,HOWEVER for most a lot of the interactions just dont happen, parnate with trazadone as well as benadryl are arcvied here pretty deep and used in the past a lot.
Again u will always have the exceptions so with maois caution is always advised, but i think since he already sees no interaction his biggest problem is the effecifness of the drug and the price overall he is paying on its degree on parnates efficay.

I had the same problem when I was on Parnate and took more than 100mg of Trazodone. Spaced out all the next day. I used to keep Oxazapam by my bedside and when I woke up I would take another 15mg. It would wear of in about 4 hours so I didn't get that sleepy feeling the next day.

True -- I was being cautious to say that it could be an interaction, but you're right in this case it doesn't matter because it doesnt affect this individual.
