epilim (sodium valporate)andAropax(prozac)

2 years ago my partner of 16 years and me broke up.He suffered severe major depression and desperate for help saw a psyciatrist. She diagnosed him PTSD like countless others had, then put him on epilim and aropax.Previously he was crying nonstop but the tears soon stopped and he turned into a zombie with an out of character bad temper. After just 4 weeks he had nutted, cut himself, overdosed on his drugs + panadol, walked along the train tracks and into traffic, with a photo of me and the kids in his hands.Admited to psych ward he was severly tripping on the pill OD.They put him on 800mg seroquel,9mg risperidone plus clonanzepam whenever he wanted it,and citalopram. He was so drugged up they had to walk him everywhere he couldnt open his eyes and he started hallucinating and having constant nightmares and became fearfull and still extremely suicidal. He has heard voices ever since and was diagnosed schizophrenic but Iv never brought that diagnosis because I know he was ok previously before the drugs and was suffering major depression and possibly bipolar.Hes been off the drugs a year now and man what an improvment, anyone else had any similar experiences like this?Im from NZ and I believe theres alot of overmedicating, misdiagnosing and cover ups going on here.Anyone else?

wow...seroquel plus all that risperdal? that's crazy. OK, so here's my story: I was dx'd bipolar II, which is kind of a "trendy" diagnosis it seems in the US. So, I was medicated up to the gills (maxed out on 7 medications a day!). I quit all the meds (that was rough). I became severely depressed--developed hallucinations (just hearing voices) *after* being put on medication. So, then, this incompetent shrink DX's me as schizophrenic. I didn't really believe it but..I was so scared, and so weakened by all the crap I'd been going through. I put up with that for about 2 months before I switched docs...this doc was just like "ok..you're Bipolar, of some sort". Switched from Abilify to Trileptal. Had a drug-induced psychotic episode (high-dose adderall used for depression and ADHD). There, the shrink at the hospital apparently thought I'd been making up all my diagnoses or something...I was re-diagnosed as having "narcissistic personality disorder," which I think is a crock of sh!t...so do my friends and anyone else who actually *knows* me. Anyway, the change in diagnosis didn't change the meds--still trileptal plus other crap. I stopped taking that, too, and now I feel...better. Not PERFECT, mind you--its not like I gave up meds and suddenly everyday is sunshine and lollipops, but I feel better, and I feel like *myself* again, which is really good.

Psychiatry kind of bothers me. I mean, there aren't any real tests for these "disorders/diseases"...its part of "the art of diagnosis," whatever that's supposed to mean. I also don't think they help people all that much...Thorazine and the Tofranil-type antidepressants were introduced in the 50s, and the drug revolution in psychiatry began. Since then, lots of people have been put on meds, but the suicide rate (in the US at least) has gone up...A WHOLE, WHOLE LOT. And now it turns out antipsychotics can sometimes induce depression/suicidality, antidepressants can cause violence and suicidality, so on and so forth. I'm sure drugs help some people in some circumstances, but I really think we've gone overboard.

Thanks for sharing your story.

hi med_empowered,well you sound pretty intellegent to me,good to hear you didnt buy their diagnosis. These docs seem to love to analize people based on what little they actually know about them, based on little knowlege of HOW THEY USED 2 B,with only what they see in their office (or hospital).symptoms match symptoms and if the meds make the person freak out and get worse then "thats just the medication or environment bringing out the hidden illness"WHAT BULL! The trouble with my partner is hes so easily led and believes anything anyone tells him.He also has reading probs and never reads anything so he cant decide for himself.I wish he could (like you sound like you really believe in yourself, thats so good).Hes getting there.I found out after half my life was over that I pretty obviously had as a teenager classic bipolar, but after antidepressants I rapid cycled and( more antidepressants later)im mixed bipolar(up and down at the same time)I think bipolar changes like mutates in some people.Like the drugs permanantly change things or for some people the changes are really severe. Its a pity people seem to be used like guinea pigs. Then what can people do? The phyciatrists have all the power (i mean who would believe someone with a severe mentall state?) and dont they know it.When all people want is to get better!!!! Thanks for your message.
