My anxiety smacking me upside the head

Posted by spriggy on October 3, 2005, at 21:12:51

Today I have had the worst anxiety that I've had in nearly 6 months.

I don't know what the trigger is... the only thing I could possibly think of is I took 1 capful of Nyquil last night to sleep (sinus headache).

Anyway, my anxiety nearly cripples me. I feel like my thoughts are going 250 mph and won't slow down.

I feel like I can't swallow, get fixated on if I am getting enough air, and this encompasses my entire thought process. I have had success in the past with deep breathing but today that didn't even help.

It gets so bad that I feel like I could just jump out of a window!

I have been praying all day for God to please release me from this-- I can't possibly function and accomplish all He has placed on my plate with this too.

I don't know what's wrong. Hopefully it was just that Nyquil.

That sounds exactly like a panic attack.

Cant Breathe, thoughts going crazy. Nyquil has a stimulant (nasal conquestant) in it (pseudoephedrine) which could of started the panic.

No stimuants for spriggy.

Well I hope your ok, did you take anything to calm it down?

Take Care

Matt

I have the same response with Nyquil. It turns me into a quivering, shaking mousie afraid of her own shadow.
I am making do with my nasal congestion and non-productive cough with adding a few drops of essential oils (eucalyptus and geranium) to a bowl of hot hot water, over which i hold my head, draped with a towel to keep the steam from escaping.
My elbows get tired but it's a fine treatment.

Reciting poetry to yourself? Cross my heart swear it helps me a lot when I need it. And if I can't think of a poem, I will recite song lyrics. There's something about the rhythm of either one that helps.

And CS's idea is good, too, with the steam: lavendar is said to be calming, and I like the smell of chamomile, so maybe a drop or two of each into a steamy pot of water, with a towel over your head? It might help your nerves, but it will help you pores -- you may not be much calmer, but you'll look so good you won't mind so much. ;-D (Hey, that thought has helped me at times more than you know! "I can't kill myself -- I look too dang good." Call me shallow, but it's true.)

Hope you feel better soon.

Spriggy, it's gotta be the Nyquil. I can't take anything with a decongestant in it. Can you take a Benadryl - it calms me down.

The last monster panic attack I had was set off by steroids given to me for a sinus infection. I had to take Xanax for a week afterward to calm down. I sat down with a pad and a pen and wrote continuously what the thoughts were that were going on inside my head. It helped calm me down.

It wasn't a panic attack- I've had those and trust me, I know when I have them.. LOL.. Actually, everyone in a 1 mile radius of me knows when I have them (screaming I'm dying, running around in circles saying I can't breathe, etc..).

This anxiety is more of a constant/chronic type- not a sudden rush of anxiety/panic that stops.

It also dawned on me yesterday that I met a friend for coffee and had a grande STARBUCKS coffee (mega caffeine!). So that may have been the culprit.

I am doing some better today. I'm about to hit the treadmill to wear off some of this horrific nearvous energy.

And Racer, those are thoughts for me to live by.

I ammm waaaay too "hot" to die. ROFL That was just funny.

Hi Spriggy,

I know just what you mean. That's exactly the kind of anxiety I have. THe wanting to jump out the window is exactly what I often think. It's almost physical - like there's way too much adrenaline rushing around in my body.

That's what I do too. If I really crank it up hard and go for at least 30-40 minutes, I get relief for at least a couple of hours.

Are you on a benzo for anxiety?

Marsha
